Anonymous from Unknown

I was sitting down the other night for dinner and my arm started to tingle and feel quite strange and Iook at my left arm and see a faded mark as if something has bitten me and in the past I have never been bitten before on my left arm so I know it's not a scar. I looked even more and saw two. Could this be from a spirit or does it mean anything?

Dear Anonymous,

If it was a spirit, I would suspect you would have felt the presense before, during, or after you noticed the bite mark(s). Has it happened again?

Wendy from Avon, NY

I used to be able to meditate and "see things." I have been so blocked for so long I do not know what to do to get it open again. About 18 years ago, I was studying Wicca and was quite open to things. I got quite sick and now I want it back but am at a loss. Please help me out. What can I do?

Dear Wendy,

By "see things" I am going to assume you are talking about visualization. If I'm wrong then please resubmit your question.

When we are meditating, we use more than just our "sight," we also use our sense of smell, taste, touch, and knowing. Most people can't close their eyes and see a red apple. Most people will be able to smell the red apple, taste the sweet tartness of the red apple, and some "know" the red apple is there. Don't be disheartened because you can't "see" the apple. Use your other senses to help you out.

Start off slowly... find a quick 3 to 5 minute meditation and practice doing it around the same time everyday. The more your body gets use to meditating, the easier it will become. Once you start feeling relaxed and at ease with meditation, your sense of "seeing" should kick back in.

Hope this helps!

Ike from Woodbridge, VA

I have a friend who asked about house cleansing. What materials would be needed and how would one be performed? Thank you.

Dear Ike,

Nice to hear from you again, Ike! Here's an easy house blessing ritual for you and your friend to do.

1 medium or large sage bundle
Heat-proof container
3 cups of water
1 glass bowl (large enough to accommodate the water and herbs)
4 tablespoons of dried lavender
2 sprigs of fresh rosemary
1 tablespoon of basil
zest of one lemon
zest of one orange
1 small sponge

1. Put lavender, fresh rosemary, lemon zest, and orange zest into the glass bowl.
2. Pour the water over the mixture.
3. Unplug all smoke detectors until the ritual is completed (VERY IMPORTANT!).
4. Move to the lowest part of the house with the sage, heat-proof container, and lighter.
5. Light the sage bundle and let the fire burn for about 30 to 45 seconds.
6. Blow out the flame on the sage bundle. The red embers are what creates the cleansing smoke.
7. Using a circular motion, wave the sage bundle near every wall, corner, and crevice of the room.
8. Once you have finished the room, stand in the center and say "By this sacred smoke this room is cleansed."
9. Go into the next room and repeat steps 7 and 8. Do this to every single room in the home (including the attic!).
10. Once you have finished, go back into the kitchen and place the sage bundle on the heat-proof container and put both of them in the sink.
11. Take the herbal bowl mixture and sponge to the front door.
12. Dip the sponge into the water and "wash" the door frame.
13. Once you have finished, stand back and say "By this sacred mixture, this home is protected against negativity."
14. Repeat steps 12 and 13 for each door and windowsill in the home.

The whole process will take about an hour, depending on the size of the home, and it's well worth all the effort!

Let me know how it goes!

If someone is a witch in this life, do you believe she will still be a witch in her next life?

Dear Rachele,

It's a possibility. If not in the next life, maybe a few lives down the line.

Al Sam from Glenmont, MD

I'm in a bit of a pickle here. My question is about totem animals. Everybody has them, some more than others, but I have a totem animal that I am deathly afraid of: spiders. I have been a practicing witch since I was young thanks to my grandfather. We've been practicing shamanism together for a long time. He passed when I was still young but I still went on practicing with his memory in my heart. When I was young, the spider has been a strong medicine animal for me, but I have always been avoiding them still. Now that I'm an adult, I still haven't gone over that fear, but I feel as if I need to stop ignoring the messages the spider still offers me but my fear prevents it. I don't really know what to do. Is it wrongful of me to keep avoiding the spider? Should I overcome my fear of spiders? If so, how?

Dear Al Sam,

Yes and no. Yes, you need to overcome your fear of spiders enough to work with them on the magickal plane. No, you don't have to overcome your fear enough to play with them in person. Like you, one of my lifelong totems is the spider, and like you I'm afraid of them. However the power and magick they bring into my life is undeniable. To deny the power of the spider totem is to deny the power within yourself. Ask your grandfather's spirit to assist you in overcoming your fear.

Allen from Quantico, VA

If one is in a relationship that is a result of a love spell, how does one get out of it? I am in such a relationship and want to get out but am drawn to the person. There are so many red flags and problems, and it doesn't seem right to me, but I'm drawn like a magnet to the person. Any ideas...

Dear Allen,

I need you to answer a couple of questions for me first because your answers will help me help you find the right solution.

Are you married or handfasted? Did you two make any kind of vows to each other, and if so, what were the vows? Is your lover a practicing witch? How long have you two been together? Are there children involved? Is there another lover you are interested in?

Send me your answers and I'll post again with a response.

Kasi from Woodbridge, VA

I have an ex who I have a 3 year old daughter with. I left him because he was violent to the extreme and now I'm in an ugly battle for custody for my child. To say I have to share my baby with a monster is an understatment and I worry every day that she is with him that something bad will happen to her. Thanks to our wonderful court system in Maryland, I have to wait and wait until we go for our final hearing in December. I have been fighting this since January. I want to know if there is a spell that will work to make him forget us and leave us alone. I planned to visit this store and talk with someone in person but I figured I'd ask when I saw the site. Thanks for any help.

Dear Kasi,

Samantha will be working at the shop this Saturday if you wanted to come by the shop to talk. Until then...

I can't begin to imagine how difficult and emotionally draining the last few years have been on you. I would like to say that the justice system won't let you down, but the truth is that our legal system is flawed.

There are three goddesses I would recommend; Kali, protector of women, Hecate, bringer of justice, and Lilith, defender of children.

There is also a book I would recommend: Utterly Wicked by Dorothy Morrison. There are a number of spells listed in the book that will help you.

I really would like to talk to you about this privately. Please send in your email address!

Heidi from Norway

Hey:) I have only one question:) I wonder, there are so many spells on the internet, but none of them sound believable. Anyone know how I can find the ones that are more credible, from the Old Grimoires? I wonder if it is possible to put a spell on a necklace, so that as long as you wear it, so will the spell work for you, is it possible?

Dear Heidi,

If you believe in a spell, it will work. Old grimoire spells are not necessarily more effective than modern ones; in either case, the caster's belief that it will achieve the desired result will determine its effectiveness.

Keep reading books and websites with an eye toward finding spells that can be adapted to your use. When you find a spell that strikes a chord with you, modify it to fit your needs, to make it even more personal and powerful. When you feel confident enough, try writing your own spells!

Yes, you can create a spell for a necklace that will last for a long period of time but it's always in your best interest to reenergize the necklace at least once every three months.

Leah from Charlottesville, VA

Hi there! I'm a relatively new solitary witch and am trying to find a good place to buy supplies like herbs in Charlottesville. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Dear Leah,

I'm sorry, but I don't know of any metaphysical stores in your area. However,
13 Magickal Moons ships all of our products, including herbs. Please visit our website for a complete list of available herbs. If you don't see what you're looking for, please feel free to call or email the shop to ask.

Dear Taheerah,

I'm really sorry hon but I have no idea. The Ask-A-Witch program is for those looking for answers regarding their spirituality, not a free psychic reading site.

Lisa from Derry, NH

I need to know what happens when you break a binding love spell, and the effects on the caster. I did a love/binding spell on my husband when we were separated. I took nail clipping and tied knots for a penis hex, and I also used my husband's hair. I also did candle spells to bind our love and each other through eternity. I want to know what will happen to us if I break those spells. The reason why we got separated was because he cheated on me.

Dear Lisa,

As long as you don't do the unbinding in a moment of anger or rage, but with the honest emotion of just letting go, then there will be no repercussions for you or him. When relationships end, it's very hard to accept the fact that it's over. One of the most healing things we can do is let go of the relationship before it turns to hate. I would suggest including the wedding band and engagement ring in the unbinding.

Cathy from Coal City, WV

I am new but eager to start casting but don't know much. What will happen if I don't cast the spell right?

Dear Cathy,

You should never perform any type of magickal working unless you're confident in what you're doing. It's okay to make mistakes during spell and ritual work; for the most part you laugh it off and keep going. But that is different than not knowing what you're doing.
Spells require focus and concentration to create a specific change in your life. If you aren't completely focused on your specific task, not only is it likely your spell won't succeed, but it could have unexpected negative consequences as well.

JoJo from Manassas, VA

I've frequented your store for quite sometime now. I adore it being the only occult store I know. I'm rather shy and every time I come in I want to ask how I can perfect my craft and personalize my practices. I'd love to be mentored one-on-one if at all possible. Is there hope for me to not make a fool of myself trying to be more educated on the path of the Lord and Goddess?

Dear JoJo,

I'm always happy to hear when people like 13 Magickal Moons. Thank you! Please don't be afraid to ask questions of any of our employees. We were all beginners at one time, and the only way to learn is to question. And I promise, we've heard it all!

A great way to begin learning about the craft and meet fellow pagans is to attend our open sabbat rituals. We just celebrated Samhain, and our Yule ritual will be on Wednesday, December 21st around 7:30 pm.

The only way to really perfect your craft is to practice it every day. Don't just talk the talk, but walk the walk. Try to spend time with your altar every day, even if it's only for a couple of minutes.

Finding a mentor who is willing to do one-on-one counseling is a little bit more difficult. Please use caution when selecting a mentor because a lot of people out there claiming to be spiritual leaders are nothing more than egocentric narcissists. Find someone that you feel a connection with, someone you can respect but are not in awe of.

Lexi from Gainesville, VA

I need help. My natural power is still intact though I haven't exercised it in a while. My younger sister (almost 7) has had trouble with bad spirits following her off and on since she was 2. I wanted to get her a pendant with the eolh rune and put a protection charm on it and wanted to know:

1) Do you have a recommendation on a charm (and/or a protection spell/charm for her bedroom)?
2) Is there a specific rope/chain that I can place the pendant on?
3) What other recommendations would you suggest?

We've cleansed the house twice and new spirits come in. Their epicenter is her room so she refuses to sleep in there and I'm running out of options. Thank you so much!

Dear Lexi,

I would recommend creating a talisman for her using a combination of herbs, oil, and polymer clay. Go to your local craft store and buy a package of black oven-bake polymer clay (I like to use Sculpey III). Work the clay with your hands until it is soft and pliable, then create a rough bowl out of it. Take a piece of black tourmaline and beat it with a hammer until you have tiny chips. Add items to the clay bowl that will protect your sister: the tourmaline chips, a small pinch of black salt (DO NOT USE WHITE SALT because it's a conductor and magnifier of energy), powdered cinnamon, powdered orris root, and one drop of lavender essential oil. Work all of the ingredients into the clay. Keep in mind you are using sharp bits of gemstone, so be careful not cut yourself. Once the ingredients have been worked in, roll the clay out with a rolling pin until it is roughly 1/4" thick. Cut out a circle of clay using a cookie cutter. Using a toothpick, draw the rune and poke a hole in the clay so it can be worn as a pendant. Bake it according to directions on the package. After baking, paint the rune red for protection. Let the paint dry then put a clear coat of polyurethane over it to protect everything. Hang the pendant on any kind of cord or chain.
Before you give the talisman to your sister, see her being protected against spirits.

To protect your home, put 3 pieces of black tourmaline in each corner of the house and black salt across any entranceway. In your sister's room, put 3 pieces of black tourmaline between her box spring and mattress. The idea here is to protect your sister from her gifts, not take them away. When she gets older, she will have the option of being able to develop and use them.

Ravenstar from Canada

I am an eclectic Witch and can't seem to find any info on this anywhere - hopefully I can find something here. I saw something that has me a bit rattled. I am involved in a group of people (secular) and had a problem with one woman - well, we all did - she's a control freak and a narcissist, but enough about her psychological state. During a discussion I said something that really angered (and maybe threatened her ego) her. She has blue eyes and I saw the irises go dead black - like a shark's - then a moment later they were blue again.

Now I would have put this down to a trick of the light or some weird perception of my own but my friend who is a Wiccan and also part of this group saw this person do the same thing several weeks later. This was before I shared my experience with my friend so I know it wasn't the power of suggestion.

What the hell is that? I have my suspicions but want to suspend judgment until I've gathered more info.

We've done a binding on this person about a month ago - because she just would NOT be reasoned with and her actions were harmful to those around her, but we both sense that we may be missing out on the right info to deal effectively with her, though the binding has been successful in most areas for a little while.

Any information or advice would be much appreciated.

Dear Ravenstar,

The reason you're not finding any info on eclectic witchcraft is because it's eclectic, meaning it is pulled form many different traditions. Eclectic witchcraft is kind of like Heinz 57, a little bit of everything pulled from different places to make a personalized spiritual practice.

Now get ready not to like me. I suspect you've written in with the idea that this woman is a "demon." But the truth is what you saw was purely physiological. When someone feels extremely threatened or has a high emotional pitch, the pupils can expand dramatically, which explains what you and other people saw. Just because someone's a bitch doesn't mean they're evil.

If so many people in your group have negative feelings about this woman then perhaps everyone should consider voting her out. If you feel the need to bind a member of your close-knit community, then there's a serious problem. Instead of binding her, you may all want to take steps to place protective barriers between you and this woman. Hope this helps.

Philip from North Yorkshire, UK

Hello. I'd like to know if Wicca and spirituality is calling me, and will I find eternal happiness and contentment and a soul mate?

Dear Philip,

Am I being web-punked? Spirituality doesn't call you; you either are or aren't spiritual. Wicca can call you, but it isn't going to be on the telephone. ;) If you're willing to work at it, absolutely you'll find happiness, peace, contentment, and a soulmate!

Katie from Alexandria, VA

I bought a book at the closing sale at my neighboring Borders recently about how to practice Witchcraft on a budget. I had never really thought much about the Craft but I find myself being more and more interested in practicing it. I'm in my senior year of high school and not really in a place to fully commit myself to all parts of the Craft but I think that there some parts that would apply to me and my beliefs. Is it okay to practice some but not all parts of the Craft? I wouldn't want to offend any Gods, Goddesses, or Spirits by accident. Also, do you have any tips on ways to get started? Thanks!

Welcome Katie!

Walking the path of witchcraft has a lot of twists and turns and ups and downs, but the great part about being a witch is being able to choose your own spiritual path. Absolutely, practice the parts you want to practice and enjoy what you're practicing.

As a beginner, I would recommend starting off with small rituals like simple candlelighting rituals to help you become more connected with your chosen spiritual path. Continue to read as much and as often as you can, and don't be aftraid to write in with more questions if you have them.

Tara from Maine

I recently made a witch bottle as a last resort to a gentleman and his wife who were giving my hubby and I a hard time. I felt the need to dramatically protect our family because we are starting to have bad luck since the intrusion of this couple, which was very unusual for us. Karmically, we're safe to use the witch bottle, correct?

I'm a Reiki Master and psychic medium. I've been using Archangel Raphael, Michael, sage, and lilac for clearings. I could feel all that negative energy all the time from the couple. I made my witch bottle and I feel great. :) I hope this was safe for me to do. I was guided to do it so I'm hoping I wasn't out of line with the Universe. Thank you.

Dear Tara,

If you were guided to do it and you feel good about doing it, then you did the right thing. I hope this response finds all that negative energy far, far away from you!

Bonny from Washington, DC

I'm looking for a good spell to heal my dog of a long-standing condition. I have a TON of candles, herbs, and stones purchased at 13 Magickal Moons over the years, but don't know the best combination for this purpose. Thank you for any suggestions you can offer.

Dear Bonny,

I wish I could answer this question, but there are a lot of factors involved. What type of condition does your dog have and how long has it been going on? Are you looking for magickal or medicinal ways of healing? (Always remember that alternative medicine should be done only in conjunction with conventional veterinary treatment. In addition, medicine and treatments designed for humans isn't necessarily good for pets.) If you can answer these questions, I'll be happy to respond as quickly as I can.

Marie from Alexandria, VA

I have a cat named Mickey, who is also my familiar and he's one very outdoorsy cat. Mickey was missing for about five weeks (this isn't the first time he was missing), but when we found him, he was well fed and still healthy. The problem is that he acted differently toward me and isn't being himself. Mickey is acting very distant like he doesn't recognize me at all. I'm planning to perform a protection spell on him, to keep him safe. But how can I get that bond back with my familiar and what should I do?

Dear Marie,

The best recommendation I can give you is when you perform the ritual be sure to invoke Bast, the Egyptian goddess of all things feline. Be sure to include a representation of Bast and your beloved Mickey on your altar. Personally, I would recommend having the two items touching or as close to each other as possible. Good luck, sweetheart!

Emily from Sterling, VA

I bought a couple of spirit (animal) candles in your shop the other day. Do you have any suggestions for how best to use them? Thanks.

Dear Emily,

Make sure you charge the candles with your intent by placing both of your palms on the candle and thinking about why you bought those specific candles. After that, place them in a shallow bowl, light the wick, and enjoy the power that comes from them. (Be sure to keep the wick trimmed to 1/4" as it burns!)

Glenda from Merrick, NY

I have a court case coming with my job. This woman has battled me for years. Now she is influencing my supervisor to write me up. What spells can I use for the court case and to stop her once and for all?

Also, my granddaughter was taken away by her mother from my son. She has injured her before. We are going to have to fight for custody. She took my granddaughter away from school and a budding figure skating career. How can I protect her and win custody? Thank you.

Dear Glenda,

Honey, I'm going to recommend a book: Dorothy Morrison's Utterly Wicked. This book has spells that will help you with all of your issues. Read it and enjoy! Go get 'em, tiger!

Kitty from Stafford, VA

Hi, I've always been into the craft. I've read up on it and studied it. It has been calling to me since I was little, but I don't think my family would accept it. They are all judgmental Christians. I really want to get into it though. I just don't know where to go or who to ask and what to do. It is such a beautiful practice. Could you give me a website or advice as to what I should do?

Dear Kitty,

Spirituality and religion are very personal choices. Although this may sound harsh, this choice is nobody else's business but your own. But just because you practice Wicca, witchcraft, or any form of paganism doesn't mean you have to walk around with "the blue star on thy brow." There is a way to practice quietly and privately. Books can be put into chests or drawers. Altars can look like decorative pieces. Rituals can be done quietly and privately, even in the bathroom if need be.

If you are over 18, you can visit a website like The Witches' Voice or stop by 13 Magickal Moons in Occoquan, VA to meet others of a like mind and learn more about the craft. If you are under 18, I wouldn't recommend going to The Witches' Voice simply because it is an internet website where anyone can create a profile; for safety's sake it's never a good idea to meet with strangers! There are a lot of books that are focused on teen witchcraft such as Silver RavenWolf's Teen Witch. Good luck, hon!

Josie from Woodbridge, VA

This has got to be a ridiculous question. I'm sure you get it all the time and it may sound ignorant or what-have-you, but I was raised Catholic and have very little understanding of the occult except for it is "bad/evil." Whether this is my view or not is irrelevant - as I was raised to believe certain things without being informed of the facts or particulars of others. It's all conditioning, and with that said, I'd like to know if "magic" is real. Be it the stuff they show on TV or the movies, moving things with energy, spells, curses, etc. I guess all of that baffles me and if you wouldn't mind giving me a general idea of how the Wiccan lifestyle works, I would be very grateful. Thank you so much for your time and again, I'm sorry for being so oblivious. I've done my own research, but anyone can write whatever they want on a website or in a self-published book. I suppose it would be best to go directly to a source who may be more inclined to educate a layman. Thanks!!

Dear Josie,

Movie magick is not real. There are no fireballs, energy balls, blinking, or nose-twitching-magick performed in Wicca. If the media depicted true magick, it would be very boring because it's all done within the body, not outside of the body. Because of this, Hollywood has to make it seem more exciting. Trust me, if I could blink a million dollars into my bank account, my life would be very different today! Real magick involves focusing your mind, heart, and energy on a specific intention or change you want in your life. Everything is made out of energy, which can be used to create change in one's life. Praying is a form of energy movement. When you kneel, bring your hands together, bow your head, and talk to God, you are sending energy and asking God to make a change in your life. What Catholics call a miracle, witches call magick. As a practicing witch, I have witnessed with my own eyes the miracle in magick and the magick that has created miracles.

Witchcraft isn't evil and I'm not evil. My lifestyle is no different from everyone else's. I get up in the morning, take care of my animals, take a shower, and go to work. I spend my day working with people and talking with people. I go home at night, have dinner, watch tv, crawl into bed with my husband, and go to sleep. There are no flying brooms or bubbling cauldrons hiding in my closet! Being a witch means I honor a masculine and feminine divine, and I follow my own spiritual path. I spend a couple of minutes in front of my altar every day to connect with the divine and give thanks for everything I have.

Coming next year, Tradition of the Witches Circle will be allowing an unlimited amount of students to attend classes via webcam. I invite you to "sit in" on the first four classes of the 2012 beginner 101 series so you can get a better feeling for what Wicca is about.

I hope that this gives you a little bit more of an understanding into witchcraft from a practicing witch. Many, many blessings to you!

Sonshine from Woodbridge, VA

I've been in a relationship with a guy for a few years. Things are good between us and then all of a sudden not. I want us to move forward but there is hesitation and indecisiveness when it comes to commitment. I want to know what I can do to improve this problem and move forward without the hesitation, like a work I can perform. Thanks a lot.

Dear Sonshine,

It's always hard when communication between lovers starts to break down. If the two of you are willing to put forth the effort to make the relationship work, I suggest both of you carry a piece of rhodochrosite, the gemstone of bonding lovers and soulmates. The rhodochrosite needs to be charged before you start carrying it. One intimate way to charge the gemstones would be to hold them in your hand while you are making love. The gemstone turns into an amulet, a reminder to both of you of the love you have and the work you're willing to do. I hope this response finds the two of you happily in love and committed to each other!

Sammie from Indianapolis, IN

I've been living in my house for over seven years and have never seen mushrooms growing in my front yard. I do believe in beings of other dimensions and I'm wondering if these mushrooms that are showing up all of a sudden are an indication that I may have been visited by fairies? If so, how should or could I show my appreciation for their visit?

Dear Sammie,

Unless the mushrooms are growing in a circle, it probably wasn't fairies. The fae create sacred space in circular patterns. You may notice a perfectly round patch of bright green grass or mushrooms/trees/flowers growing in a ring.

But if you want to honor the fae, there are a few things you can do. Remove any cast iron, a natural repellant to fairies, from your home and garden. Grow St. John's wort and rosemary in your garden as these herbs naturally attract the fae. In your home, you can dedicate a little altar to them. Make sure you do your research on correspondences that are fae friendly.

Cyndi from Manassas, VA

I have been interested in Wicca for about two years now and I have read a ton of books. I would love to get some actual people interaction and maybe find someone to mentor me. Do you have any suggestions on how to find someone?

Dear Cyndi,

As it just so happens, Tradition of the Witches Circle at 13 Magickal Moons just started their 101 series on Friday evenings. It's still early enough for you to join and not miss too much. Please visit the 13 Magickal Moons website for an updated class schedule.

I also invite you to join us every Wednesday evening for Tea Night from 6-9 to meet other people of a like mind.

Nicholl from Woodbridge, VA

Is there such a thing as a natural witch? I also wanted to get control of empathic abilities I have had for years now.

Dear Nicoll,

If you're a witch then you're a natural witch. All witches are natural witches.

To control or block empathic abilities, I would suggest using either black tourmaline or blue opal. Both of these powerful gemstones can help shield empathic abilities and therefore give you greater control. Personally, I would recommend you save up your money and go out of your way to find a blue opal ring. It'll be a beautiful piece of jewelry that you can wear every day. It can help keep you sane from everyone's crazy emotions.

Sandee from Cabot, AR

What is something I can use to help cleanse myself of the hatred I feel for my ex-husband? It's been four years and it still feels fresh. I'm tired of the pain and the hate.

Dear Sandee,
Hate is an active emotion. You actively have to get rid of it. You can't meditate, breathe, or pray it away. My suggestion would be to make a pillow voodoo doll to represent your ex-husband then beat that pillow voodoo bastard within an inch of his life! Make Jerry Spring proud!

Now a warning: This is going to be ugly. Really, really ugly. Send family members off for a vacation. Stay away from those priceless valuables. Warn your neighbors that the howling and screaming they are going to be hearing is just you. Then smudge the shit our of your house when you're done. Repeat every time you start to feel those feelings bubble up. Eventually those feelings will just disappear.

You really need to ask yourself why are you still holding onto him. Hate is a way of holding on. It is just the flip side of love. Be honest with yourself and your emotions and allow the healing process to begin.

Elle from Louisiana

I have been feeling a bit disconnected from my path lately. No matter what I do, I cannot seem to "feel" like I did four months ago even. I have been on my path for many years. I do not know what happened, but I feel like I am spiritually blocked. Any ideas?

Dear Elle,

Go smaller! Sometimes doing the long, drawn-out ritual can be tiresome and, dare I say, boring the longer we have been on the path. Think outside the box. What haven't you done yet? What magickal practice have you not ventured into? What tradition have you not studied? If you're a solitary, find a group that does open sabbat rituals and keep the esbats for yourself. It sounds like you just need to reawaken the passion you once had for your spirituality.

Melissa from Lake Ridge, VA

Every so often, I'll hear someone mention their spirit or totem animal. I'm wondering if everyone has one (or more) and how you discover it.

Dear Melissa,

Totem spirits are animals or insects that individuals connect with on a personal level. Totems can also represent the energy/magick we currently need in our lives or for our specific situation. A person can have multiple totems, a single totem that has been with them their whole life, or they can have different totems at different times of the year. Yes, everyone has one.

Look around you and start taking note of the creatures and critters surrounding you. Do you always see deer? Do you see a red robin constantly in your back yard? Do spiders seem to follow you around? Do you feel a connection to a specific type of animal like cats, dogs, wolves, or elephants? The animals thatyou see the most and the animals you are drawn to are usually your totem animals/spirits. Hope this helps!

Ashleigh from Lorton, VA

I am currently in a dark place. There is so much negative energy around me that I can't seem to find any solace in my spirituality, which frightens me. I feel disconnected and worn, to the point where I no longer know where to turn. Is there some way to banish this fear and uncertainty? I have felt before that all is lost, but was able to restore myself in the end, so to speak. This is the darkest I have felt, and I am frightened that I can't gather the strength to pull myself out. What would you recommend to revive my hopes and faith?  If I recover, what should be the next step?

Dear Ashleigh,

It hurts my heart to read about your loss of happiness and joy in the world around you. Without knowing the details of your situation, I would make a very uneducated guess that what you are feeling right now may be clinical depression. There is NO SHAME in having depression! It does not mean that you are weak or pathetic. It simply means that your brain is sick and it may need medication to feel better. Visit this page at WebMD for some more information about depression.

I know that a lot of witches believe we should use only a holistic approach when dealing with feelings of depression and/or loss of interest in life. However, I believe that holistic healing techniques should be used in conjunction with Western medicine. Hopefully this response finds you with medical insurance with which you can go visit your primary care physician to speak to him about your situation and treatment options.

If visiting your doctor is not an option for you, I invite you to come by the shop and talk about this. You are not alone!

Joseph from Manassas, VA

Hi! I have been feeling like my spirit has been blocked or trapped and was wondering if you have any great ways that I can try to unblock myself, if that makes any sense, ha ha. Can you suggest any stones, herbs, teas, or whatever could possibly help? :)

Dear Joseph,

Um... I hope you're reading this... because I need more information. Do you feel like somebody stole your soul? Do you feel like someone else trapped your soul? Do you feel like you trapped your own soul? There are too many variables for me to answer this question currently. I invite you to resubmit your question with more details.

Sara from Palm Bay, FL

I have been practicing for almost three years. I am a solitary but do belong to a local group. Everyone has a different path and a different way of casting a circle. Is there a standard way?
Dear Sara,

No, there is no standard way to cast a circle. Everyone practices in a different way, feels things in a different way, and experiences things in a different way; therefore, circles should always be cast in a way that makes the practitioner feel the most comfortable and powerful.

Sue from Gaithersburg, MD

The Wiccan religion comes so naturally, but I still practice "conventional" holidays alongside it. I've been told this is typically "wrong" to do in both religions. Wicca doesn't seem this strict, though. Is there something wrong with the way I practice?
Dear Sue,

Conventional holidays are more like family traditions and gatherings. So, no... there is nothing wrong with the way you currently practice.

Liezl from Lanham, MD

Can you refer a reliable spellcaster?

Dear Liezl,

Sorry darlin', but no... I cannot refer you to a reliable spellcaster because all spells you work should be performed by YOU. If you feel you need assistance or added energy, you should invite well trusted friends to join you, but at the end of the day, the spell NEEDS to be cast by YOU.

Megan from Charlottesville, VA

I have been a solo practioner for years, but recently have felt that I need to socialize with other Pagans/Witches. How do I find people in my local area? Thanks!

Dear Megan,

Have you ever heard of A Witches' Voice? It's a fantastic website with a lot of useful and interesting articles AND it also has a fantastic section called "Witches of the World". This sections helps you to find and connect with others of a like mind in your local area.

Please be warned: ALWAYS meet in a public place. NEVER give anyone your home address or go to a stranger's home. Just because they claim to be Wiccan/Pagan/etc. doesn't mean they are a good person!

Jan from White Creek, NY

Help with grief from the death of a beloved dog?

Dear Jan,

First and foremost, I am so sorry for your loss. The death of a loved one is never easy. Here is a ritual I did for my beloved furry Big Daddy. I hope it helps!

Passing to the Land of the Dead

1 candle for pet
1 green candle for me
1 black candle for Anubis
1 white candle for Ma’at
Sage bundle for cleansing
13 tea lights to surround the circle
Elemental candles
Drumming music playing softly in the background

Casting the Circle
Deosil round I cast my blade,
With ancient power the sphere is made.
Creating a world of protection and love,
A place in between the below and above.
My magickal cats safely within,
Awaiting the completion so our ritual may begin,
To honor the Divine, our Lord and Lady.
As I will it, so mote it be.

Calling to Earth
I call to the North and the Keepers of Elemental Earth.
I ask that you join me in helping PET NAME move on,
To let go of this physical plane and move on to the Land of the Dead
Where he will know peace, joy, and love.
I bid you blessings and welcome.

Calling to Air
I call to the East and the Keepers of Elemental Air.
I ask that you join me in helping PET NAME move on,
To let go of this physical plane and move on to the Land of the Dead
Where he will know peace, joy, and love.
I bid you blessings and welcome.

Calling to Fire
I call to the South and the Keepers of Elemental Fire.
I ask that you join me in helping PET NAME move on,
To let go of this physical plane and move on to the Land of the Dead
Where he will know peace, joy, and love.
I bid you blessings and welcome.

Calling to Water
I call to the West and the Keepers of Elemental Water.
I ask that you join me in helping PET NAME move on,
To let go of this physical plane and move on to the Land of the Dead
Where he will know peace, joy, and love.
I bid you blessings and welcome.

Invoking Anubis
Great Anubis, Lord of the Hallowed Land,
I am here tonight to begin PET NAME’s journey
To Your sacred embrace,
To be guided and protected
As he passes from the Land of the Living
To the Land of the Dead.
I bid you blessings and welcome, Great Anubis.

Invoking Ma’at
Great Ma’at, Goddess of Justice and the Weigher of Souls,
I am here tonight to begin PET NAME’s journey
To Your sacred scales of justice,
To be weighed against your feather.
May you see his heart as pure and innocent
And allow him to pass through to paradise.
I bid you blessings and welcome, Great Ma’at.

Helping PET NAME Pass into the Land of the Dead
Great Anubis and Ma’at, I ask that you both ease the pain and suffering of my beloved PET NAME. He is greatly loved in the Land of the Living by a large number of people. He has been a comfort and a source of happiness for all of us here. Welcome him home to the Land of the Dead. Welcome him home to Paradise. Let him feel no more pain. Let him feel no more suffering. Let him feel the release of his physical body as his soul moves on.

Thank You Ma’at
Thank you Great Ma’at, Goddess of Justice and the Weigher of Souls,
For being here with me tonight to begin PET NAME’s journey
To Your sacred scales of justice,
To be weighed against your feather.
May you see his heart as pure and innocent
And allow him to pass through to paradise.
I bid you farewell and blessed be, Great Ma’at.

Thank You Anubis
Thank you Great Anubis, Lord of the Hallowed Land,
For being here with me tonight to begin PET NAME’s journey
To Your sacred embrace,
To be guided and protected
As he passes from the Land of the Living
To the Land of the Dead.
I bid you farewell and blessed be, Great Anubis.

Releasing of Water
Blessed be to you, Keepers of Elemental Water.
I thank you for helping PET NAME move on,
To let go of this physical plane and move on to the Land of the Dead
Where he will know peace, joy, and love.
I ask that you leave me with the love to see this task through.
I bid you Blessings and Namaste.

Releasing of Fire
Blessed be to you, Keepers of Elemental Fire.
I thank you for helping PET NAME move on,
To let go of this physical plane and move on to the Land of the Dead
Where he will know peace, joy, and love.
I ask that you leave me with the courage to see this task through.
I bid you Blessings and Namaste.

Releasing of Air
Blessed be to you, Keepers of Elemental Air.
I thank you for helping PET NAME move on,
To let go of this physical plane and move on to the Land of the Dead
Where he will know peace, joy, and love.
I ask that you leave me with the ease of mind to see this task through.
I bid you Blessings and Namaste.

Releasing of Earth
Blessed be to you, Keepers of Elemental Earth.
I thank you for helping PET NAME move on,
To let go of this physical plane and move on to the Land of the Dead
Where he will know peace, joy, and love.
I ask that you leave me with the strength to see this task through.
I bid you Blessings and Namaste.

Releasing the Circle
Widdershins round I cast my blade
To undo the sacred sphere I made,
In this place of protection and love,
A place in between the below and above.
The circle is open, but unbroken. Farewell to those I adore.
Merry meet and merry part until we merry meet once more.

Ike from Woodbridge, VA

I am a former Marine infantryman. I deployed a few times, and every time I came home, I had more questions than when I left. I saw very weird, unexplainable supernatural things. I need to know if I am losing my mind or it is all real. Who do I talk to?

Dear Ike,
I'm really sorry to hear about your experiences while you were overseas. For the most part, my answer would be no, you are not crazy. However, without knowing exactly what you felt you saw, that is a very hard question to answer. I invite you to contact me again with your email in the question section of the Ask-A-Witch form so I can email you directly to discuss this further.

Wiccanwoman_1 from Amelia, OH

I have always had an interest in faeries. I am Wiccan and am thinking of following the faery path. It just feels right to me. I have had psychic readings saying that there are faeries all around me. Do you think this would be a good fit for me?

Dear WiccanWoman_1,

If it feels right to you, then that is all that matters... GO FOR IT!

Natalie from Manassas, VA

My best friend's husband is in the hospital for heart problems. I'd like to do a simple healing spell, but I am a nanny so I need to do one that only uses objects I can easily find around the house. Thank you so much for your help!

Dear Natalie,

First and foremost, you must have verbal consent in order to do any type of healing on any person. No matter how much we may love someone, no matter how deep a connection we have to them, we cannot force healing onto them.

Assuming you have consent, doing a healing spell without spending any money is as easy as pie. Gather together a bowl, some table salt, a picture of the person in question, and some type of candle. It doesn't matter if it's a jar, votive, tealight, or even a birthday cake candle. Place the picture flat on a table with the bowl of water sitting above, but not on, the picture. Bring your hands together palm to palm in front of the heart chakra. Focus on your breathing for a moment. Once your palms feel wam, place them over the picture and see that person getting better. See it, feel it, and know it. Push all of that positive healing energy into the picture. Once you feel like the energy has stopped, usually after a few minutes, take about a tablespoon of table salt and pour it into the bowl of water. Say "With earth as his body, he is healthy. With water as his blood, he is healthy. With earth and water he gets healthier every day." Light the candle. Say "With air as his breath, he is healthy. With fire as his spirit, he is healthy. With air and fire he gets healthier every day."

Tarot Insights: Keeping Secrets

People often have questions about tarot card readings, so 13 Magickal Moons’ tarot reader, John, will share some of his insight, information, and tales from the tarot table from time to time on this blog. Have a tarot-related question? Feel free to ask John at Ask-A-Witch.

My name is John, and I’m a professional tarot card reader. It’s a labor of love for me, and I really enjoy helping people. I’ve been reading cards for almost 21 years now, and I’ve had a professional practice at 13 Magickal Moons for nearly 6 years. I’m blessed to have a devoted, loyal clientele.

While I enjoy my work immensely, I have some very interesting tales from reading cards that you may find interesting, funny, or both, with some advice if you ever consult me or another psychic. Please note: All of my readings are confidential, so I will never reveal any names or enough information for you to figure out who the client is. Any tarot reader worth your time and money will also have a code of ethics that includes a confidentiality clause. Speaking of confidentiality…

Keeping Secrets

What you say to me at my table stays with me. But if you bring someone with you, you are giving that person permission to hear everything. Many people choose to bring a friend—for support, to help them remember a reading, because it’s a bonding experience, etc.—but be careful who you choose.

I am often hired to do “tarot parties” for all kinds of different occasions. The first time I read at a bridal shower, I asked the mother of the bride where she wanted me to read. She led me into the middle of the living room. She requested that everyone who was being read do so in public so everyone could be a part of the readings. Of course, I’m thinking this is NOT a good idea, but it’s her house and her call. I guess guests could have declined, but she had thrown down the gauntlet and I don’t think anyone wanted to back down. Ego can be a powerful motivator.

Please understand when you pick up those cards, you never know where they might take you. And as my wife will tell you, I’m not a shy person. You see where I am going with this.

The Maid of Honor was up first, and right away I see her current relationship in the center of the layout as “The Lovers”. Apparently her boyfriend was very…well, quite satisfying in a physical way, to put not too fine a point on it.

Okay, so I’m the only man in this room filled with women and while I’m rarely at a loss for words, I’m trying to get the message across and not be too crude. So after a second or two, I come up with, “He’s really good, isn’t he?”

“Oooooh, YEAH!!!” she screams, and every woman in the place starts howling with laughter and approval. Whew! That was a close one.

The event went extremely well, but the moral of this story is that you should be careful about having a reading in front of others. A tarot reading is a private event for your ears only unless you choose to have others listen or share your reading with other people. If you do, pick someone who knows how to keep your secrets.

If you ever are a guest at an event where people want you to have a reading in a public forum like this one and you are uncomfortable with the idea, ask to be read in another room or at another time. And if you have a reader or psychic to your event, private readings are usually the way to go.

Please come over and take a look at my blog, and if you find it interesting I hope you’ll follow me as well as Ask-A-Witch. If you’d like to know more about me—I’m a Scorpio so I know curiosity!—you can check out my website. I would be honored to read for you, and hope you’ll consider me if you’d like some insight.
