Sue from Gaithersburg, MD

The Wiccan religion comes so naturally, but I still practice "conventional" holidays alongside it. I've been told this is typically "wrong" to do in both religions. Wicca doesn't seem this strict, though. Is there something wrong with the way I practice?
-------------
Dear Sue,

Conventional holidays are more like family traditions and gatherings. So, no... there is nothing wrong with the way you currently practice.

Can you refer a reliable spellcaster?

-------------

Dear Liezl,

Sorry darlin', but no... I cannot refer you to a reliable spellcaster because all spells you work should be performed by YOU. If you feel you need assistance or added energy, you should invite well trusted friends to join you, but at the end of the day, the spell NEEDS to be cast by YOU.

Megan from Charlottesville, VA

I have been a solo practioner for years, but recently have felt that I need to socialize with other Pagans/Witches. How do I find people in my local area? Thanks!

-------------

Dear Megan,

Have you ever heard of A Witches' Voice? It's a fantastic website with a lot of useful and interesting articles AND it also has a fantastic section called "Witches of the World". This sections helps you to find and connect with others of a like mind in your local area.

Please be warned: ALWAYS meet in a public place. NEVER give anyone your home address or go to a stranger's home. Just because they claim to be Wiccan/Pagan/etc. doesn't mean they are a good person!

Help with grief from the death of a beloved dog?

-------------

Dear Jan,

First and foremost, I am so sorry for your loss. The death of a loved one is never easy. Here is a ritual I did for my beloved furry Big Daddy. I hope it helps!

Passing to the Land of the Dead

1 candle for pet
1 green candle for me
1 black candle for Anubis
1 white candle for Ma’at
Sage bundle for cleansing
13 tea lights to surround the circle
Elemental candles
Drumming music playing softly in the background

Casting the Circle
Deosil round I cast my blade,
With ancient power the sphere is made.
Creating a world of protection and love,
A place in between the below and above.
My magickal cats safely within,
Awaiting the completion so our ritual may begin,
To honor the Divine, our Lord and Lady.
As I will it, so mote it be.

Calling to Earth
I call to the North and the Keepers of Elemental Earth.
I ask that you join me in helping PET NAME move on,
To let go of this physical plane and move on to the Land of the Dead
Where he will know peace, joy, and love.
I bid you blessings and welcome.

Calling to Air
I call to the East and the Keepers of Elemental Air.
I ask that you join me in helping PET NAME move on,
To let go of this physical plane and move on to the Land of the Dead
Where he will know peace, joy, and love.
I bid you blessings and welcome.

Calling to Fire
I call to the South and the Keepers of Elemental Fire.
I ask that you join me in helping PET NAME move on,
To let go of this physical plane and move on to the Land of the Dead
Where he will know peace, joy, and love.
I bid you blessings and welcome.

Calling to Water
I call to the West and the Keepers of Elemental Water.
I ask that you join me in helping PET NAME move on,
To let go of this physical plane and move on to the Land of the Dead
Where he will know peace, joy, and love.
I bid you blessings and welcome.

Invoking Anubis
Great Anubis, Lord of the Hallowed Land,
I am here tonight to begin PET NAME’s journey
To Your sacred embrace,
To be guided and protected
As he passes from the Land of the Living
To the Land of the Dead.
I bid you blessings and welcome, Great Anubis.

Invoking Ma’at
Great Ma’at, Goddess of Justice and the Weigher of Souls,
I am here tonight to begin PET NAME’s journey
To Your sacred scales of justice,
To be weighed against your feather.
May you see his heart as pure and innocent
And allow him to pass through to paradise.
I bid you blessings and welcome, Great Ma’at.

Helping PET NAME Pass into the Land of the Dead
Great Anubis and Ma’at, I ask that you both ease the pain and suffering of my beloved PET NAME. He is greatly loved in the Land of the Living by a large number of people. He has been a comfort and a source of happiness for all of us here. Welcome him home to the Land of the Dead. Welcome him home to Paradise. Let him feel no more pain. Let him feel no more suffering. Let him feel the release of his physical body as his soul moves on.

Thank You Ma’at
Thank you Great Ma’at, Goddess of Justice and the Weigher of Souls,
For being here with me tonight to begin PET NAME’s journey
To Your sacred scales of justice,
To be weighed against your feather.
May you see his heart as pure and innocent
And allow him to pass through to paradise.
I bid you farewell and blessed be, Great Ma’at.

Thank You Anubis
Thank you Great Anubis, Lord of the Hallowed Land,
For being here with me tonight to begin PET NAME’s journey
To Your sacred embrace,
To be guided and protected
As he passes from the Land of the Living
To the Land of the Dead.
I bid you farewell and blessed be, Great Anubis.

Releasing of Water
Blessed be to you, Keepers of Elemental Water.
I thank you for helping PET NAME move on,
To let go of this physical plane and move on to the Land of the Dead
Where he will know peace, joy, and love.
I ask that you leave me with the love to see this task through.
I bid you Blessings and Namaste.

Releasing of Fire
Blessed be to you, Keepers of Elemental Fire.
I thank you for helping PET NAME move on,
To let go of this physical plane and move on to the Land of the Dead
Where he will know peace, joy, and love.
I ask that you leave me with the courage to see this task through.
I bid you Blessings and Namaste.

Releasing of Air
Blessed be to you, Keepers of Elemental Air.
I thank you for helping PET NAME move on,
To let go of this physical plane and move on to the Land of the Dead
Where he will know peace, joy, and love.
I ask that you leave me with the ease of mind to see this task through.
I bid you Blessings and Namaste.

Releasing of Earth
Blessed be to you, Keepers of Elemental Earth.
I thank you for helping PET NAME move on,
To let go of this physical plane and move on to the Land of the Dead
Where he will know peace, joy, and love.
I ask that you leave me with the strength to see this task through.
I bid you Blessings and Namaste.

Releasing the Circle
Widdershins round I cast my blade
To undo the sacred sphere I made,
In this place of protection and love,
A place in between the below and above.
The circle is open, but unbroken. Farewell to those I adore.
Merry meet and merry part until we merry meet once more.

Ike from Woodbridge, VA

I am a former Marine infantryman. I deployed a few times, and every time I came home, I had more questions than when I left. I saw very weird, unexplainable supernatural things. I need to know if I am losing my mind or it is all real. Who do I talk to?

-------------

Dear Ike,
I'm really sorry to hear about your experiences while you were overseas. For the most part, my answer would be no, you are not crazy. However, without knowing exactly what you felt you saw, that is a very hard question to answer. I invite you to contact me again with your email in the question section of the Ask-A-Witch form so I can email you directly to discuss this further.

I have always had an interest in faeries. I am Wiccan and am thinking of following the faery path. It just feels right to me. I have had psychic readings saying that there are faeries all around me. Do you think this would be a good fit for me?

Dear WiccanWoman_1,

If it feels right to you, then that is all that matters... GO FOR IT!

Natalie from Manassas, VA

My best friend's husband is in the hospital for heart problems. I'd like to do a simple healing spell, but I am a nanny so I need to do one that only uses objects I can easily find around the house. Thank you so much for your help!

-------------

Dear Natalie,

First and foremost, you must have verbal consent in order to do any type of healing on any person. No matter how much we may love someone, no matter how deep a connection we have to them, we cannot force healing onto them.

Assuming you have consent, doing a healing spell without spending any money is as easy as pie. Gather together a bowl, some table salt, a picture of the person in question, and some type of candle. It doesn't matter if it's a jar, votive, tealight, or even a birthday cake candle. Place the picture flat on a table with the bowl of water sitting above, but not on, the picture. Bring your hands together palm to palm in front of the heart chakra. Focus on your breathing for a moment. Once your palms feel wam, place them over the picture and see that person getting better. See it, feel it, and know it. Push all of that positive healing energy into the picture. Once you feel like the energy has stopped, usually after a few minutes, take about a tablespoon of table salt and pour it into the bowl of water. Say "With earth as his body, he is healthy. With water as his blood, he is healthy. With earth and water he gets healthier every day." Light the candle. Say "With air as his breath, he is healthy. With fire as his spirit, he is healthy. With air and fire he gets healthier every day."

Tarot Insights: Keeping Secrets

People often have questions about tarot card readings, so 13 Magickal Moons’ tarot reader, John, will share some of his insight, information, and tales from the tarot table from time to time on this blog. Have a tarot-related question? Feel free to ask John at Ask-A-Witch.

-------------

My name is John, and I’m a professional tarot card reader. It’s a labor of love for me, and I really enjoy helping people. I’ve been reading cards for almost 21 years now, and I’ve had a professional practice at 13 Magickal Moons for nearly 6 years. I’m blessed to have a devoted, loyal clientele.

While I enjoy my work immensely, I have some very interesting tales from reading cards that you may find interesting, funny, or both, with some advice if you ever consult me or another psychic. Please note: All of my readings are confidential, so I will never reveal any names or enough information for you to figure out who the client is. Any tarot reader worth your time and money will also have a code of ethics that includes a confidentiality clause. Speaking of confidentiality…

Keeping Secrets

What you say to me at my table stays with me. But if you bring someone with you, you are giving that person permission to hear everything. Many people choose to bring a friend—for support, to help them remember a reading, because it’s a bonding experience, etc.—but be careful who you choose.

I am often hired to do “tarot parties” for all kinds of different occasions. The first time I read at a bridal shower, I asked the mother of the bride where she wanted me to read. She led me into the middle of the living room. She requested that everyone who was being read do so in public so everyone could be a part of the readings. Of course, I’m thinking this is NOT a good idea, but it’s her house and her call. I guess guests could have declined, but she had thrown down the gauntlet and I don’t think anyone wanted to back down. Ego can be a powerful motivator.

Please understand when you pick up those cards, you never know where they might take you. And as my wife will tell you, I’m not a shy person. You see where I am going with this.

The Maid of Honor was up first, and right away I see her current relationship in the center of the layout as “The Lovers”. Apparently her boyfriend was very…well, quite satisfying in a physical way, to put not too fine a point on it.

Okay, so I’m the only man in this room filled with women and while I’m rarely at a loss for words, I’m trying to get the message across and not be too crude. So after a second or two, I come up with, “He’s really good, isn’t he?”

“Oooooh, YEAH!!!” she screams, and every woman in the place starts howling with laughter and approval. Whew! That was a close one.

The event went extremely well, but the moral of this story is that you should be careful about having a reading in front of others. A tarot reading is a private event for your ears only unless you choose to have others listen or share your reading with other people. If you do, pick someone who knows how to keep your secrets.

If you ever are a guest at an event where people want you to have a reading in a public forum like this one and you are uncomfortable with the idea, ask to be read in another room or at another time. And if you have a reader or psychic to your event, private readings are usually the way to go.

Please come over and take a look at my blog, and if you find it interesting I hope you’ll follow me as well as Ask-A-Witch. If you’d like to know more about me—I’m a Scorpio so I know curiosity!—you can check out my website. I would be honored to read for you, and hope you’ll consider me if you’d like some insight.

Amber from Fredericksburg, VA

I have a LOT of trouble meditating (as in I can't at all). Nothing I've tried has worked - any suggestions???
-------------
Dear Amber,

A nice simple way to get your body used to the idea of slowing down is to focus on your breathing. Breathe in deeply through your nose for a count of 6, hold for a count of 4, exhale slowly for a count of 6, and hold for a count of 4. Repeat for 3 minutes twice a day for 7 days. Then increase by 1 minute per week.

If you find your mind constantly wandering, simply tell yourself what you are doing while you are doing it. Say something like "Inhale, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. Hold, 2, 3, 4. Exhale, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. Hold, 2, 3, 4." This will help you stay focused on what you are doing.

Hope this helps!

Rebecca from Woodbridge, VA

I am a new witch, choosing to practice alone as opposed to joining a coven. I have started collecting items for my altar but don't feel I can put it all together until I have everything I need. What basic items should I be focusing on?
-------------
Dear Rebecca,

You will need a representation of the God, Goddess, earth, air, fire, water, and yourself. As you can see from the recent answer to Eva from Lake Ridge, it doesn't have to be expensive. It just has to be meaningful. Once you have all of these elements, put your altar together. You'll find as you grow into your spirituality that you will add to your altar often.

Eva from Lake Ridge, VA

I've been reading about Wicca for a while, and I feel like it really clicks with me. However, I don't really want to have to come up with all these items that so many beginner books say I need. Is an altar setup really necessary?

-------------

Dear Eva,

Yes! An altar is a physical representation of your chosen spiritual path. However, despite what all the books say, this does not have to cost you a bloody fortune. By simply looking around your house, you'll be able to find everything you need to create a meaningful and powerful altar.

This is what I would do:
Altar cloth = an unstained pillowcase
Goddess = a simple wine glass
God = a nice steak knife (we always have a random knife we have no idea where it came from!)
Earth = leaves from a neighboring tree
Air = a feather found outside or a bowl of lemon peels
Water = a simple bowl of water
Fire = a tea light

Finally, place something on the altar to represent you. For example, this could be an old piece of jewelry you no longer wear or a favorite picture of yourself.

What makes an item sacred is the cleansing and consecration of your altar, meaning that the items used on your altar are only going to be used for your spiritual practice. In other words, the wine glass and steak knife are no longer be used in the kitchen.
