Max from Toronto, Ontario

My wife separated from me because of separation magic. Then someone she met did some other sort of magic on her, I guess a love spell or a binding spell. Since then, she cut off contact from all her friends (who looked after her when she attempted to commit suicide, lived on the street, etc.). She seems to keep in touch with her family. She's completely cut off contact with me. I've been told that her mind's been distracted a LOT by this magic. My question is this: Can a love/binding spell be so powerful that she doesn't see reality, i.e. say she's in Africa, but she's being told she's in London or some other city in Europe, would she be gullible enough under the magic (assuming it is very powerful) to believe that? What I am trying to get at is will she be a mindless zombie pretty much, and will she believe/do whatever she is told?

Also, how long would it be before this spell wears off, and what would happen if I tried to get someone else to reverse it? Not to bind her to me, but just to bring back things to normal.

Many thanks for your help.

Dear Max,

No... I don't believe a love/binding spell can be so powerful as to prevent her from seeing physical reality.  If your ex is acting like a "mindless zombie" then it most likely has more do with the mundane world (like mental dis-ease, drugs, alcohol, etc.) than the magickal world.

I have no idea if a spell was actually cast so I can't answer your question about the length of time the spell/binding might last.

Unfortunately, sometimes it's easier to believe that someone we love has been taken from us via a spell than to see that maybe she decided to just walk away.  People change and they don't always change for the better.

Open One from Luzerne, PA

I was hoping you might be able to answer this question. I performed a reversal spell, and the first time I did it a few months ago, the spell was intense. The candle that should have lasted four hours burned intensely for twenty minutes, and when the spell was complete, I immediately heard three hard knocks! I felt no fear and embraced it. Now I recently performed another reversal spell. Again, the candle burned quickly and flame was intense - really intense. At the end, this time I heard only one knock, but it actually scared me! I didn't turn around. I kept my eyes low and went back inside to calm down. A few minutes later, I went back outside and the feeling and fear was gone. I cleaned up the ashes and disposed of them in the garbage, sealed so no one else will open or tamper with it. My question is WHAT WAS THE KNOCKING? The first time and the second time? Was it an acknowledgement or something else? Any ideas? I really need to know. Thank you.

Dear Open One,

The "knocking" sound you heard could very well have been an acknowledgement or an affirmation of the magick you performed.

My question to you is this... why did you need to perform two reversal spells?

Tiffany from Lorton, VA

Hello! My eight-month-old cat recently went missing and has not returned. Do you have a good spell for a lost cat? Thank you!

Dear Tiffany,

Has your cat returned home yet?  Please submit another question with your email address in it.

Zac from Small Town, NC

I am looking for a runic pentacle altar tile. Would you happen to know any place that carries one?

Dear Zac,

AzureGreen has a number of different altar tiles.  I looked, but as of right now they do not have runic pentacle altar tiles.  Keep checking back with them though since they are always updating their inventory!

Kayla from Fairfax Station, VA

Hi, it's me again. I was wondering if there are any simple spells (that don't require an altar) for attracting a mate, attracting money, enhancing creativity/artistic abilities and/or getting over obstacles with driving that are good for someone who's never done a spell before. (Sorry if I bug you guys with all my questions, but I'm curious - kind of like a cat. On a weird note, my sister said I was likely a cat in a past life.) Thanks! ^^

Dear Kayla,

Shamless plug here...

Why yes, Kayla, there are simple spells you can cast.  13 Magickal Moons has a product line called Cerri-A-Witch!

Cerri-a-Witches are powerful portable spell packets perfect for the busy on-the-go witch. Simply hold the Cerri-a-Witch spell packet in the palms of your hands and repeat the incantation three times to activate and empower the spell.

Each Cerri-a-Witch spell packet includes herbs and gemstones chosen for their specific magickal properties.

Al from Spokane, WA

Hello, I wanted to thank you for your response to earlier questions; books you suggested were really helpful. I continue to read frequently and with interest :).

I'm still studying, and I haven't worked up to spell work yet. I've done some focused meditation and things of that sort, but I have some very important negotiations coming up for work. I know that spells should always be cast by the person that needs them because their need is greatest, and that's the actual vehicle for the universe to receive the message, but I don't feel ready to do that yet. I have a couple of questions:

1) Is there a sense when you're ready to take the next step on the path? I suppose it's different for everyone, but maybe in your experience, did you know when you were ready to cast your first spell?

2) Since I'm not ready to cast spells, I was thinking that I could get a stone or charm of some sort that is connected to charisma/persuasion/communication and charge it with my intent (you've recommended that to others, holding between palms, that sort of thing, which makes sense and seems easy enough). What sort of stone would you recommend? Other symbols or runes I could craft onto cloth or something?

Thanks in advance.

Dear Al,

1) You'll feel the "need" to take your next step down your path and that "need" will just feel right. When to cast your first spell is different for everyone, but one common factor is the rightness of the moment you want to do the spell.  I can't really explain it other than to say you'll just know.

2) Carnelian and citrine are two stones which can help build confidence.  Holding the stones between your hands is a form of spell casting... because you are putting energy (magick) into the gemstone to let the gemstone know what you want it to do.

Angel from Woodbridge, VA

My mother and I are both interested in converting to Wicca, but we are a little confused about how to start. I bought a book called Wicca: A Year and A Day by Timothy Roderick. I've heard from many sources that this book is a good way to start but I'm not entirely sure if we should just jump right into this book. Is there anything else we should look into first or should we just go for it? Thank you.

Dear Angel,

To be honest I haven't read Wicca: A Year and A Day by Timothy Roderick, but I have read a few of his other books and I've liked them.

Read this post for a few other suggestions for those new to Wicca.

Blessed be to you and your mother!

Tara from Manassas, VA

Hey there! I'm a not-so-new witch looking for the next level of practice. I read over the blog, and am drawn to read the book by Raymond Buckland, so thank you for listing such great/thorough advice! I have researched Selena Fox a little. I want to be a wise, gentle but POWERFUL witch as I grow. I've seen some really amazing years so far in my 30+ years on this Earth, and I want to add something truly inspiring to the art of the craft and to the quality of life for those around me. Any sparks that come to mind. I can feel that you may get a clear sense of the vision I have for myself and my path with witchcraft and how much respect I have for how awesome it is to be aware of God/Goddess and all of the magick that exists around us. Peace and richest blessings.

Dear Tara,

The best thing any person/witch can add to the craft is to be a fantastic person with a quick wit, an open heart, and a willingness to illuminate the path for others.

Gene from Manassas, VA

I just had a good friend pass. Me and some of her other friends are holding a small service to honor her. It will have Druid and Wiccan rituals and is open to all faiths or beliefs. Can you suggest anything I may use or do, as I have never done this before? I know we are using candles and Samantha may have an appropriate one for this purpose. Also, we are using sage and was wondering if you guys have any in stock for this?

Dear Gene,

I am so sorry for your loss and I think it's a wonderful idea for you and her friends to perform a small Passing to Summerland Ritual in her honor.

The most important thing to remember when performing a Summerland ritual is to focus on the life they lived and easing the souls passing from this life into the great beyond.

As a matter of fact, 13 Magickal Moons does currently have small ($3.00) and large ($9.00) sage bundles currently in stock.  We also have the Summerland witch bottle and Summerland candle as well.

Heather from Indianapolis, IN

I'm not familiar with witchcraft at all, but two of my friends told me to ask here. I've seen two upside-down yellow triangles side by side in a vision I had. Could you tell me what this means?

Dear Heather,

I have no idea... sorry!!!

Fatima from Abu Dhabi, UAE

Hi, I always wished to be a witch and fly with broom. How can I be a witch? How can I practice? They tell me to practice, but how and like what? I really want to be a witch and fly with broom. How?

Dear Fatima,

Sorry, honey... but witches don't and CAN'T fly on a broom!  Being a witch is a spiritual choice and a way of life.

Kara from Woodbridge, VA

I have been interested in witchcraft for a long time, but I've never quite figured out how to go about it. I haven't found many helpful websites, and I don't have the money for any books or supplies. I have, in the past, purchased several stones, lavender oil, sage oil, peppermint oil, rosemary oil, and a few incenses from 13 Magickal Moons. I also live with some family, and I have to hide all of this from them because they're very judgmental and I believe they would kick me out if they knew. I'm not entirely sure what kind of advice/help I'm looking for, but I thought you would be the person to ask. Thank you.

Dear Kara,

If you're just looking to meet other people then you should come to 13 Magickal Moons on Wednesday evenings for our "Tea Nights," well it's more like "Coke, Diet Coke, Sprite, and Mountain Dew Nights" now!

Kelly from Cincinnati, OH

Hello, I was seeking advice about casting a binding spell. There is a man who is unjustly threatening my family with financial harm. I tried the freezer spell but it doesn't seem to be working. I wanted to try something stronger, and I have a spell picked out, but I wanted to get an opinion about whether casting a binding spell on a whole family's behalf could cause harm to individuals in the family, if my intent is only on preventing harm and not causing harm to the bound person? I'm a little wary, because I had two minor financial crises after I cast the first spell and I get the feeling the events were related. I'm afraid that if I cast a stronger spell I will get stronger side effects. Thank you.

Dear Kelly,

Cast your spell and have faith you are doing the right thing... because it sounds to me like you are.

The only reason your previous spell would have backfired or had a karmic slap would have been because you crossed a line, fueled the spell with negative energy/emotions, or were seeking unjust revenge.

Kim from Jerusalem, Israel

Hi there, I'm single with a 1-year-old baby. His dad left me, and I really need help.

Could you please read my story and my dreams and tell me if the dreams that I'm having are a sign?

I've had a boyfriend for 2-3 years. Things went wrong and he broke up with me. He left me for a coworker of his. I think she waited for a chance to take him from me. She knew that things between us were not as good as they used to be. They have been together 4 months, but he cheated on her with me.

Thirteen days ago, I asked an old Moroccan lady to do a magic spell that will break them apart and get us back together. Among the things I gave her, there was also his sperm. Since then I've had dreams about it:

1) The same night, I dreamed that she wanted to break up with him, but didn't want to.
2) The next night, I dreamed that I wanted to get back to him too, but he didn't want to.
3) The third night, I dreamed we saw each other on a beach. He came with his girlfriend and I came with mine (I don't have boyfriend, but he thinks I do). Me and him had an argument about who should leave the place.
4) A few days ago, I dreamed that my father and my ex-boyfriend were setting up a meeting, and my dad didn't want me come along. Therefore, I tried to manipulate him and I cut my palm and my arm. There was a little blood.
5) A few days days ago, I dreamed that I went to my aunt and asked her to cast love magic for me because I thought the one that the Moroccan lady did is not working.

Before I cast the spell, I dreamed that we were at his girlfriend's house while she wasn't there. A friend of mine (a girl) and a friend of his (a boy) were with us. For some reason, we all were naked on one bed. My ex-boyfriend wanted to get intimate with me, but I pushed him away and kissed my friend.

Later on, his girlfriend and her friends came to the house and therefore he asked me to leave the place.

Thank you so much.

Dear Kim,

A Moroccan love spell using his sperm... really?!?!  Why would you want to be with a man who not only left you and his son, but cheated on you as well?

It's the second to last paragraph which has caught my attention.  In your dream, your ex-boyfriend wanted to get intimate with you and YOU rejected HIM for the arms of another. That speaks volumes!

M from Harrisonburg, VA

Hello! I need some advice. I am in college and I recently received a new roommate. We get along really well, but my old roommate's friends are being petty because she was forced to move out instead of me. They have been pulling some petty bullsh*t and I am tired of it. What are some good spells for protection or banishment or such to stop this? Thank you!

Dear M,

Try using a slightly modified version of this banishing spell.

Good luck!

Jerry from Los Angeles, CA

Okay, so two days ago I found some kind of oil on my door. It looked like someone did it on purpose, and today I saw the same thing, but this time it was on my steps on the corner of the last steps. Should I be worried about it? And if so, what can I do to undo whatever they are doing?

Dear Jerry,

I would definitely rinse/wash your door before touching it or the oil. Without knowing what combination of oils they used, I can't really tell you if the intent was magickal, mundane, positive, or negative.

Michael from Oakton, VA

I'm at a loss as to what to do. I have a friend who has only recently turned 18 and she is really unhappy at home. She moved out once a couple of weeks ago and her parents called the police on her. They wouldn't tell the police her age, but when they found out from her, they said they couldn't do anything to bring her back home. She stayed away for about a week and then went home again, but still argues with her parents. I saw her yesterday with a couple of cuts on her arm and after some persuasion, she told me that she started cutting herself. She begged me not to tell anyone. She's also started smoking a couple of years ago, but I only just found out and she's taking painkillers. She's moving out again in a week, but I need to know what I can do to help her. Please answer this soon. Thank you in advance.

Dear Michael,

There isn't much you can do for her. She has her own decisions to make and her own path to follow.  Unfortunately it sounds as if the path she's walking is filled with a lot of pain and confusion.  Talk to her and let her know you are there for her.  Try to listen and hear what she is saying.  But also, set your boundaries.  If her use of painkillers becomes an addiction then you might need to walk away from her.

Keep me updated...

The Only Informed One from Lexington, KY

*Sorry for the repost, Ask A Witch readers. It seems the internet gremlins accidentally deleted this post somewhere along the way.*

So Obama just won the election over the clearly superior Romney. I am now convinced he is a wizard and he's cast some kind of spell over Americans so they can't see what an idiot he is through brainwashing us. Are we all just that blind? Do you know what spell he used? I just can't believe this great nation has become so stupid. It has to be magick. What do you think? Is there anything you or I can do to lift this craziness?

- The Only Informed One

Dear Dear Only Informed One,

If President Obama used a spell to "brainwash" more than 60 million people to become "so stupid" then I need to get my hands on that goddamn spell! Oh, the changes I would make and the riches I would have...

This campaign, for whatever reason, has brought out the absolute worst in people. I've spent half my day listening to Obama supporters and Romney supporters bicker back and forth with such disrespect and maliciousness that it makes my stomach turn.

Take your question for example... you just called half of America "stupid" and "blind" because they didn't vote your political preference. It doesn't make them stupid. It makes them have a voice, THE VERY FOUNDATION OF WHAT THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA WAS BUILT ON.

When it comes to politics, people tend to feel very passionately about their individual choices and this passion can easily become hostility when others don't share their views OR if they agree with the opposing team. This is one of the reasons why I prefer there be no political discussions or debates between students/clients/customers... because nothing good can come of it.

Like it or not, you are stuck with President Obama for the next four years unless you move out of the country.

Kasey from Tallahassee, FL

Hello! Just a drawn out question for ya'll! I am a vivid dreamer, I remember most if not every dream I have after waking, or can recall it with practice. I feel very connected and close to my dreams and wanted to know if perhaps I have an excellent imagination in my subconscious or if I am actually leaving my body in my dreams. Last month, I had a dream that I was flying very close to the asphalt on a certain road, and upon realizing I was flying (or hovering above the ground but moving quickly forward), I saw headlights and shot upward into the sky. I recognized where I was, and remembered thinking "I should head home now," and with that promptly turned toward where my home would be from the destination and woke up. But the weird part was I heard a very loud distinct cracking sound like the crack of lightening but without the rolling of thunder, and then awoke, like I slammed myself back into my body. I didn't feel tired or drained... but my question was, is there a way to focus on leaving my body again (if I did) or being able to test if I ever left my body at all? Flying in my dreams is not uncommon. Usually I initiate it though, I don't just find myself flying in a dream, usually I realize it's a dream and despite whatever is going on, I decide to go flying instead (because I love love love it!). When I was younger, I wanted to be a witch so I could fly on a broomstick and strike revenge on people. When I learned witches don't fly on broomsticks, I ditched the idea, that and my father really did not approve (also the rule of three scared me off). I have been reading a lot of questions asked on your site from younger girls who I really understand. When I was younger, I felt like Wicca would make me more powerful, because let's face it, when you're ten, you feel like the rug for most people, at least I know I did. I'm not saying you should deter younger people from witchcraft, but I think a lot of younger children just starting to make spiritual decisions reach out towards Wicca for vengeful reasons. I'm really happy that I turned from it when I was younger, because I had so much hatred in my heart, and I have learned Wicca is not about revenge. Oddly, even though now I consider myself to believe in God and Jesus Christ, Wicca has been in and out of my life. I wanted to ask some questions about this too. I feel like Wicca is calling out to me, ever since I can remember. I'm not saying at 4 I wanted to be a witch, but ever since I learned about witches, I wanted to be one. I think it's like a phase most girls go through, like first we all want to be a princess and then an angel and then a witch. Anyway I hope this is a chick witch reading because I bet a guy witch would be bored by now. So on and off I really like Wicca. My mom was very supportive but my dad's side of the family did not like it all. My mom used to buy me books and calendars for it. One day she did tell me a story that eventually scared me out of it. I don't know why she would buy me books and little daily spell calendars and then tell me this. She said when she was 16, she found a black book, I can't remember if she actually called it a bible or not, like a dark bible, and said she had taken to reading it. She said she was alone in her living room and had fallen asleep and felt something very dark on top of her and that she tried to wrestle it off but couldn't. She broke away and it followed her down the hallway and she ran into her mom's room or grabbed a bible. She told it to me like ten years ago and she's not here to consult so the details are sketchy. So like I said I backed off from it (what 12 year old would be brave enough to persist?). I never really looked back until I moved her to Talli with my dad. For some reason, when I went into middle school I fell into a group of girls who practiced Wicca. I did not seek them out, they "adopted" me, and as I became closer friends with them they told me they practiced Wicca. As I am sure you know, little pissed off girls playing witch is very different than adults (not to say you guys play, but I hope you know what I mean). So because I was living with my dad at the time, I opted out on the Wicca thing, but stayed friends with the girls. Now I'm 21, and it's not so much that I wish to practice Wicca rather than I wish to use Wicca to help answer some questions, like the dream question, and also if a spirit is attached to me, or something else. I've seen ghosts, I've watched things move, I've had some terrifying nightmares where I actually stayed up just to make sure I didn't dream a dream twice. This one dream I wrote down and burned before I would sleep again it was so freaking scary to me. I even spoke with some entity that sat at the foot of my sister's bed, but I never know when something is real or just a dream... I just want some one to talk to I guess. Thanks!

Dear Kasey,

There is a great book, Astral Projection for Beginners by Edain McCoy, which can help you control and enhance your gift.

If you're interested in developing your medium abilities (talking with spirits), a great book would be So You Want To Be a Medium by Rose Vanden Eynden.

Yes, I am a "chick witch" and there was nothing boring about your question.  As a matter of fact, I found your entire rant a little entertaining.  I'm not sure if you realize it, but much of what you wrote came off as rude and condescending.

Andre from Las Vegas, NV

I keep seeing the same sign multiples times a day. It's the trinity or the triquetra. I don't understand why I keep seeing it in tattoos, necklaces, and clothing every day in different places. I've been going through a lot of turmoil and I'm curious if this is anything significant? Thanks!

Dear Andre,

The trinity or the triquetra typically represents a holy trinity such as the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; Maiden, Mother, and Crone; or even God, Goddess, and Self.

I would take it as a sign that you should tap into your religious beliefs to help you through your difficult times.

Patricia from Dallas, TX

I was a Christian, and I am very new to using magick, and I am trying to learn as much as I can to be Wiccan. I was told I was a natural witch, and a very special Capricorn, because my birthday falls on the 11th, and my destiny number is also an 11. I have always had psychic dreams, but they have dwindled down to a minimum because of antidepressants. Without going into a book (ok, too late), I cast a spell this morning that I wrote myself, and I used many different ingrediants that I felt were important to the meaning of the spell. It was a contact spell to bring communication between me and an ex-lover who has cut me off. I wasn't trying to put a love spell on him, just to make him call me with an open mind so we can at least be friends and talk about the situation so that I can have closure. I do love him, so of course in the back of my head, I believe if he contacts me, there may be a chance I can talk him into coming back, but I did not want to affect his free will to MAKE him love me. I feel that I am naturally powerful, I have had thoughts manifest immediately, but I am impatient and doubting my power. How do I know the spell worked, and how do I relax and just let Spirit have his way?

Dear Patricia,

Well... if he calls you then you know the spell worked. ;-)

When casting spells, you have to have confidence and a positive attitude about the magick you worked!

Let me know if he contacted you.

Susan from Germantown, MD

Every Christmas season, my family becomes very negative and family squabbles tend to pop up as a result. I, on the other hand, am nicknamed "Suzy Snowflake" because I LOVE this time of year. However, I seem to empath their moods and I'm noticing the more family squabbles and negativity passed my way, the less I love this time of year. It's been a rough end-of-year for me spiritually and financially. My chakras are all unbalanced and I'm becoming ill as a result or everything. Is there a way I can banish their negativity without hurting them or handing back what they give to me?

Dear Susan,

Absolutely!  I recommend you buy yourself two pieces of jewelry: a piece of bloodstone (to absorb negative energy) and a piece of black tourmaline (to protect against negative energy). Both of these are fairly common gemstones and you should have no problem find them as jewelry.
If you are unable to find jewelry, then carry the polished gemstones either in your pocket or in your bra.

At the end of each night, place both stones in a bag or box of lavender and sage to cleanse them of negative energy they may have picked up during the day.  Remember to grab them again in the morning!

Alexandria from Warren, MI

Well I am working on my way to becoming a witch and I am very dedicated. I've tried spells but they haven't really worked. I was just wondering how do you get your powers/energy stronger?

Dear Alexandria,

Great question!  One way to increase your energy is to practice, practice, and then practice some more.  A simple, yet effective, exercise is to create an energy ball in the palms of your hands and then begin to enlarge and shrink the ball for five to ten minutes every day or every other day.  Be sure to ground and center after each session.  You'll find your energy reacts quicker and stronger each time.

Another way to increase  your energy level is to take classes on energy, such as Reiki energy.

Good luck!

Melissa from Woodbridge, VA

Hello. I am responding to my weather magic inquiry. I should have been more specific. I had read online from Patti Wigington, on (Pagan/Wiccan studies), that weather magic can be used as a form of divination. Dorothy Morrison has a spell that one can focus on a cloud (from the sky) in order to release blocks.

So I was wondering more about using the weather as a divination tool. I should have been more specific in my previous post. Sorry! And, no, I have no interest in manipulating the weather :)

Dear Melissa,

LOL... thanks for clarifying that for me!

To be honest with you, I haven't heard of an actual form of divination which uses weather as the tool.  I have, however, heard of using weather-related aspects in nature as a form of divination. One example of this is to use the images/symbols you seen in clouds as a way of receiving intuitive messages.

When doing your research, try looking up weather signs, symbols, and omens!

Hope this helps!

Heather from Ocean Springs, MS

Hi, I have a problem with there being more than one mind in my body. Four to be exact. There's me and three other minds. They all have their own personality, and two of them are self-destructive. One of the personalities has actually taken over me and caused me to struggle with self-harm problems. One of them is trying to keep me away from the one person who makes me happiest and trying to put me with someone I myself do not like anymore. The other one is not against me; in fact, she pushes me to go through with things I want to do. While I'm fine with one of the three, I really would like my mind to myself for once. Is there something I could do to seal them away? I am contemplating getting a tattoo in the near future and was really wondering if there was some sort of seal I could get tattooed on my body and a spell to coincide with it.

Dear Heather,

You could have "Dissociative Identity Disorder," which use to be called "Multiple Personality Disorder."

There are no spells, symbols, rituals, or tattoos which can help or cure you!

Jennifer from Guateng, South Africa

I need help urgently. My mom's life is in danger. She has been cursed and now she has a green slime ball in her stomach and inside the green thing it has worms. On her right hand she has a diamond in. She went for a so-called exorcism, but now it has just gotten worse. Now she is coughing up a black substance and she can't go near salt or crystals or she wants to faint and if she reads the Bible, her eyesight goes blurry. Then somtimes she will all of the sudden start staring at you for a long time without blinking and then on her forhead begins a y shape. Can you please help us? We don't know what it means and what to do.

Dear Jennifer,

I don't want to sound cold or callous, but you're asking the wrong person.  I would contact another priest to perform another exorcism for you. I would also recommend you visit a doctor to be sure there is nothing physically wrong with your mother.

Good luck

Alex from Portland, ME

I have a particularly rude and inconsiderate roommate. Since she moved in, I have felt bogged down and just plain dirty (separately from her disgusting habits and the dirty dishes). I wanted to use hot foot powder, but I can't find bluestone, and I've also heard that this is kind of black magic and shouldn't really be tampered with unless you want it coming back threefold. I don't want to hurt her, but I do want her to be more aware and pleasant around others. Ideally, I want her to find a life somewhere else but I know that might not be possible. Do you have any suggestions of what I could do? How can I safely influence her to change her ways, or find her blessings elsewhere?

Dear Alex,

Give this spell a try and see what happens. Good luck!

Jenna from Hixon, TN

So I want to do this spell that involves dressing a candle with essential oils. I only have fragrance oils. Can I use those, or will they mess up the whole thing?

Dear Jenna,

You absolutely can use fragrance oils!

Hi, it's me, again. (Sorry I take up so much of your time, *laughs a bit*) I recently got The Steampunk Tarot and have been doing some readings for myself to demystify my romantic future, and I usually get the King of Wands (a person driven by inspiration and passion) within the spread. Does this mean my future lover will be like that?

Dear Kayla,

We love getting repeat questioners!

It depends on the placement (where he is landing in your spread) of the King of Wands!

Can I use a silver chime candle as a grey candle in a spell?

Dear Chris,

Yes... you can also use white or black as substitutes.

Rick from Milwaukee, WI

How do I free my self soul from desiring a person?

Dear Rick,

Try doing a releasing spell to release the desire you feel for this person!  After you do the spell... delete them from your life. No emails, text messages, facebook, etc.

I am new to Wicca and just got a book of shadows by Silver RavenWolf. I am wanting to know what is the first thing I need to do in order to cast a spell or cast a circle? Any help you can give a newbie, I would appreciate it greatly. Blessings!

Dear Danielle,

I would recommend you start with Teen Witch by Silver RavenWolf before beginning to cast spells or circles.

Courtney from Kingston, NH

Hello!  I had emailed you about myself and coworkers having to deal with an unhealthy working environment due to our boss and had gotten a response on September 20, 2012. Thank you for your ideas. I hid a bloodstone in my boss's office, but I am unable to get into her office when she isn't there unless she is out for a meeting. If I were to spray her office with the sage and lavender she would smell it and wonder what it is, so I don't think I will be able to do that. If you have any ideas on getting her to leave her position or to become a super nice boss, I would love help with it. Also if there is something we can do as a group or as individuals to protect ourselves from her, we would love help with that too. Thanks so much!

Dear Courtney,

I'm sorry you and your co-workers are still having such a difficult time with your nasty boss.  I would still suggest using the sage and lavender after she leaves your office, just to help keep her negativity away.

You can try performing a binding ritual to keep her abusiveness away from you.

1 black candle (and a candle holder)
9 clothing pins (with a black top if possible)
1 picture of your boss (she should be alone in the picture)
A pinch each of: cayenne pepper, black pepper, black salt
A cookie sheet with aluminum foil (to protect the sheet)
1 black marker (sharpie works best)

On the back of the picture write:

We bind you and your abusive way
We bind your deeds and the things you say
Change your attitude or leave your position
A sincere apology with true contrition

Place the black candle into the candle holder.

Pin the picture to the candle using the 9 pins (be sure to put pins in the eyes and mouth).

Sprinkle the herbs on and around the candle.

Light the candle.

Once the candle has finished burning, take the candle holder off the sheet (no point in throwing it away), wad up the remains of your spell and bury it away from your home (by at least ½ a mile).

Katie from Alexandria, VA

Hello! I'm in college, and for Samhain, a friend and I have decided to leave our offering of food for the spirits in the woods near campus, and have that be our celebration. I wanted to know, is there any symbol that is connected to Samhain specifically, and do you know of something we can say, a spell or etc, when we leave our offering? Much thanks!

Dear Katie,

Although there are no symbols specifically connected with Samhain, there are
appropriate symbols you can use. A few examples of these symbols are the pentacle/pentagram, besom, and cauldrons.

I love the idea of leaving an offering out for the spirits in the woods.  I would say a little prayer of thanks to our beloved Lord and Lady for the many blessings in your life.

Bridgetta from Sterling, VA

As a witch, I am not exactly sure how to approach the questions surrounding evolution from my Atheist and Christian friends. What are your thoughts? Do pagans believe in evolution? And if you don't want to make a blanket statement, what are your thoughts or others' thoughts you've heard on the subject? Thanks!

Dear Bridgetta,

Belief in evolution (or not) doesn't really have a place in Wicca, Witchcraft, or Paganism.  Different cultures over many eras have adopted many different "creation myths."  If I were you, I wouldn't approach the subject of evolution with your friends until you decide for yourself what you believe.

Brittney from Las Vegas, NV

There is something haunting my son's room, causing him to have nightmares and making the room uncomfortable to be in. I white saged the room and re-blessed it. It has only made things worse. What can I do now to make it leave my son alone?

Dear Brittney,

Sounds like you need to do a good old-fashioned banishing ritual for your son's room.

Items Needed:
Banishing incense (Sage, lavender, frankincense, myrrh, mullein, sweetgrass)
Snowflake obsidian and tourmaline (for each windowsill in the home)
Black salt (about 4 ounces)
Sage bundle
Red candle
Black candle
  • Place all of the above items on a tray.
  • Light the charcoal.
  • Light the sage and cleanse gemstones.
  • Smudge yourself and any other participants with the sage.
  • Ground and center.
  • Light the red candle and say in a strong voice: I call upon the power and strength of the Warrior Goddess to defend me, my family, and my home!
  • Light the black candle and say in a strong voice: I call upon the power and strength of the Protector God to protect me, my family, and my home!
  • Place some of the banishing incense onto the charcoal and say in a strong voice: In the name of the Warrior Goddess and Protector God, I banish all negative energy from my home, my family, and myself!
  • Allow the room to fill with the banishing incense.
  • Draw a pentagram in the middle of the room and say in a strong voice: With the powers of Earth, Air, Fire, Water, and Spirit, I banish all negative energy from my home, my family, and myself!
  • Repeat this in each room in the home, including the basement and attic.
  • Once you have finished the last room, go to the center of the home and say in a strong voice: By the powers of Earth, Air, Fire, Water, and Spirit, this house is cleansed of all negative energy! We are defended by the Warrior Goddess! We are protected by the Protector God! You are BANISHED!
  • Place the gemstones (1 of each) in every window in the home.  If this is not possible because there are a lot of windows, place in at least one window per room.
  • With the black salt, draw a line across the outside of every entrance of your home (front door, back door, garage, etc.).

Jillian from Woodbridge, VA

I had questions about rose water. Can I make it, and if I can, how? Otherwise, where can I get some? I know a few spells that call for it, but are there any other good uses for it?

Dear Jillian,

Of course you can make your own rose water!  There are a number of different ways you can prepare it, but here is one of the easiest ways:

  • Take a dozen fresh rose petals (red, white, or pink is preferred)
  • Place them in a ceramic or non-metal pot
  • Pour enough water into the pot to cover the petals
  • Simmer on very low heat until the petals have lost their color
  • Strain
  • Store in the refrigerator!

Tim from Gainesville, VA

With Samhain coming soon, I have been trying to think of a really good ritual. I'm new at the craft, and have become more aware of what it really means, and really wanted to show it with a good ritual. Thanks.

Dear Tim,

Date: October 31 (Greater Sabbat/Cross Quarter)
Other Names: Witches' New Year, Halloween, or All Hollow's Eve
Colors: Orange, brown
Symbols: Fall fruits, pumpkins, divination sets, pictures of ancestors

Samhain, pronounced "sow-in," marks the end of the witch's year, so performing a ritual to let go of physical, emotional, mental, or spiritual baggage you may have could help you start your new year on a positive note!

This is also the day the veil between the world of the living and the dead is at its thinnest. Remember your loved ones that have past on this year by setting a place for them at your dinner table. Leave an offering of food and drink on your doorstep for those souls that still wander this world. This is also a good time to do a divinatory reading such as a tarot spread, rune casting, or crystal ball gazing.

Kat from Westlake, OH

My Aunt Anne has cancer in her lung. I was wondering if there is anything magical that could possibly help her a little. I am a little new to this on the white magic with charms and little spells. Is there anything I can do? Thanks.

Dear Kat,

I'm so sorry to hear/read about your Aunt Anne.  There are a few things you can do to help your aunt during this difficult time:

1. Find a Reiki Master or Practitioner and begin having monthly sessions. Reiki is a form of hands-on energy healing which could help your aunt with physical pain and help stabilize her emotions as well.

2. Create or buy an amulet and consecrate it with love, strength, and courage.

3. Take her to see a comedy... laughter can heal in ways many!

4. Look into black strap molasses.

I hope some of these ideas help. Please keep me updated on how you, your family, and your aunt are doing.

Jason from Nitro, WV

I am curious as to whether there is a magical or spell-related tie to the act of leaving something under another person's bed? A manipulative person that I know leaves a bottle under my partner's bed every time he visits. I don't know if this is his way of taunting me or if there is an actual magical tie to this act. When I discover it, I make it a point of removing the item and taking it out of the house.

Dear Jason,

Yes it is possible, and very likely, that the bottle this person is leaving under your partner's bed is magickally charged.

Have you asked this person WHY they are leaving a bottle under the bed?  Have you told your partner about it?

Good for you for removing the item(s) and getting it out of your home!

Kayla from Fairfax Station, VA

Dear Ask-A-Witch,

(Gosh, I write into this blog a lot!) I have two questions: 1) I've been reading up on the chakras (my sacral chakra has little activity, but that's beside my point) and I came across indigo/crystal children, and noticed I fit a definition of a crystal child (born between 1990-2010, intense stare, highly affectionate/artistic, love of music and animals, interested in rocks/stones, empathic/sensitive/forgiving of others/generous, like choosing my own meals, etc, etc, etc....). Is there a surefire way to tell if one is an indigo or crystal child? Is it even worth it to know?

2) My little brother has been depressed lately. He's irritable, he's been throwing up, losing a lot of weight. He's been going to therapy lately, but I feel like some of his chakras may be closed, and if he opens them, he'll start to feel better. Am I right to assume that? Is there anything I can do to help him? Should I ask him if he wants me to help open his chakras/meditate with me?

Dear Kayla,

I also have an intense stare, am highly affectionate/creative, have a love of music and animals, am interested in rocks/stones, am empathic/sensitive/forgiving of others/generous, like choosing my own meals, etc, etc, etc.  Only I was born long before the 1990's!

For the most part, I am going to leave my own personal opinion of indigo/crystal children out of this.  HOWEVER, I will say this... don't buy into the BS many "experts" are throwing out there.

As for your brother, if you wanted to work with him on his chakras, then that would be a wonderful bonding and healing experience for both of you.  I suggest you read Liz Simpson's The Book of Chakra Healing to help you along your path!

Nice to hear from you again!

Jessica from Ireland

Although I'm 29 years old, I have an old teddy bear that I've been very attached to from the time I was born. It sits on my bed now and is still my most beloved possession.

I recently found out I'm pregnant, and my husband suggested I give the teddy bear to the baby when she is born. But it's really old and the material is delicate, so I was going to put it beside the baby's crib instead. Since I spent so many childhood years holding the bear for comfort, I feel as though it holds a great deal of my personal and spiritual energy and is in a sense a magickal object already. Do you know of any protection spells I could also put on the bear to watch over my baby while she sleeps?

Dear Jessica,

This might be the sweetest question I have ever received!!!

You're right in thinking your bear is already a magickal object, and a powerful one at that. Because your bear is in a delicate state, I suggest you buy your daughter her own bear, similar to yours but not exactly the same.

Enchant her brand new bear with protective magick.  One way to do this is by adding a sachet inside of the bear.

List of supplies:
Black velvet bag
Amethyst chips (protection)
Citrine chips (anti-nightmare)
Powdered lavender (soothing)
Powdered chamomile (calming)
Powdered cut sage (protection)
Powdered St. John's Wort (healthy/happy brain)
Lock of your hair (protection and love)
Lock of your husbands hair (protection and love)

Put everything together inside of the bag. Open the bear at a seam, put in the bag (preferably in the middle stomach area), and sew the seam closed.  Hold the bear in your arms, against your heart, with your palms on the bear and say the following incantation three times:

Lord and Lady hear my plea,
Keep my daughter safe for me.
As you watch her grow from above,
Fill her with your protective love.
