Jenn from Lorton, VA

I am interested in knowing faeries relating to Wicca. What do Wiccans believe faeries are? What do they do for a witch, or the earth and humans in general? What do they do for a person? What do they do in magick? I am having a hard time finding an article online about this matter.

Dear Jenn,

There are a couple of books I would recommend for you:
Enchantment of the Faerie Realm by Ted Andrews and A Witch's Guide to Faery Folk by Edain McCoy.

The fae are extremely powerful beings to work with... be careful what you wish for. Make sure you know the fae you're inviting into your life. Best of luck.

Cynthia from Stafford, VA

I have been looking for someone to guide me in this. I have dreams about people and within three to four days they call or come over. Could I be a witch? Wicca makes sense to me. Please help. I need a friend.

Dear Cynthia,

If Wicca makes sense to you, then Wicca is the path you should be walking at this point in your life. Your psychic abilities have nothing to do with Wicca, witchcraft, Christianity, or any other religion. Your psychic abilities are what you have. Your religion is what you practice. Consider your psychic abilities a gift and learn how to not only enhance your gift but to protect it as well.

Maggie from Fairfax County, VA

How do you approach a coven and ask to be accepted?

Dear Maggie,

You don't approach a coven and ask to be accepted. You approach a coven and get to know them and see if they're the type of people you want to be spiritually connected with. If you and the coven have warm fuzzies about each other, then the offer will be naturally extended to you. But never join a coven without having practiced with them a few times. Don't be blinded by pretty words. Watch their actions.

Andre from Las Vegas, NV

I have been struggling between Christianity, Judaism, and Wicca for quite some time now. I have also been very apathetic because of the confusion. I was brought up Christian with Jewish roots and have explored Wicca from an early age. I can't seem to make a choice. I know one may not even be necessary, but I'm a very black/white person unfortunately. Regardless, I have experiences beyond the five senses, although many I find not credible. The most strong is I dream of someone's death the night before it happens, in great detail and accuracy, but never know exactly who it is. But whenever I report it to my loved ones, it happens within that week. Things like this make me feel confused. I feel lost, due to the fact that many things on the internet and stores are purely for capitalism... I guess what I'm aiming at is, how do I know the real deal when I see it? As far as a teacher goes and where can I find the goddess. I believe she is with me, but only watches with concern as I struggle with this. Thank you for listening :)

Dear Andre,

Honey, you're not going to see the real deal. You're going to feel it. It's going to click into place for you one day and all your confusion will go away. Start by looking for pagan groups in your area (try The Witches' Voice) and see if any of them feel right for you.

As for the goddess, she is standing there next to you. She's talking to you and waiting for you to hear what she is saying. If you acknowledge that the goddess exists, you're halfway there. Just quiet your mind, open yourself up, and tell her you're ready to start listening.

Sera from Lake Ridge, VA

Hello! I have a friend who's trying really hard to get a job with law enforcement, and she's waiting to hear back from HR right now. Is there anything I can do to maybe bring her luck with this, or a specific god/goddess I could make an offering to on her behalf? Thank you in advance.

Dear Sera,

Carry malachite and High John for success, green aventurine for luck, and citrine or carnelian to make your friend more attractive to perspective employers.

Jeannie from Montclair, VA

Hi, I've had sensitive abilities since I was very young. After coming out of a coma, I became highly sensitive. I use my abilities often to help others, especially on paranormal investigations: when people think they are being haunted by evil spirits, I come in and I help them realize it's a relative by using my abilities. Recently I was told by a medium that I'm not only sensitive but I have psychic mediumship abilities also, especially with my dreams. I have a two-part question. I have been practicing to develop my abilities even more and work with dowsing rods. What other tools can I use to help me further? Would tarot cards help? Also I'm an empath and suffer from chronic pain. What ritual or cleansing can I do to protect myself from getting other people's pain? I do a white light protection prayer and meditation but I would love to do something stronger so I won't be in pain so much. Thank you so very much!

Dear Jeannie,

Absolutely, working with tarot cards can help enhance one part of your psychic ability.

It is extremely unhealthy and unsafe to bring the emotions and physical ailments of other people into yourself. To help protect and control empathic abilities, I recommend buying a piece of jewelry with natural blue opal. This will be something you wear every single day. Once you purchase the jewelry, do a powerful cleansing ritual on it (it sounds like you know how you do that, so I won't add the details here). After the ritual, you will want to consecrate and empower the blue opal to protect your empathic ability. One easy way to do this is by performing your white light protection prayer onto the ring itself. Recharge your ring every morning the first month you have it, once a week for the next six months, and once a month after that.

Is there a way to perform a summoning ritual for an entity, assuming the entity is positive?

Dear Emily,

I'm not sure what you mean by "summoning," but this post may help.

You're welcome to resubmit the question with more information, such as what entity you're trying to summon and for what purpose.

Rhonda from Tennessee

Is there a coven in Memphis, Tennessee and if so, how do I contact them to become a member? Can they contact me?

Dear Rhonda,

There is a fantastic website that you can visit called The Witches' Voice. This site has listings for local solitaries, groups, and events. All you have to do is search by your state and city. Good luck finding a group to work with!

How do you know if you are a witch or not? I have a lot of strange things happen at my home. Sometimes I can feel someone there, but no one is here but me. My dogs and my cat get really upset and go crazy.

Dear Cynthia,

What you're experiencing has nothing to do with being a witch and everything to do with having a spirit in your house. Being a witch is something you feel deep in your heart, not something you sense in your home.

Keep in mind spirits are usually harmless. You may feel uncomfortable with the idea of a spirit in your home, but remember they were people like us and nothing to fear.

Tuxedo Mask 13 from Kentucky

Is there any working substitute for candles? I am only 13 and cannot light fires in the house... thanks for reading! YOU'RE AWESOME!

Dear Tuxedo Mask 13,

Yes, there are plenty of substitutes you can try, depending on your preferences. You can work with gemstones. You can also use pictures you've found on the internet, pictures you've taken yourself, and paintings. And believe it or not, good old fashioned playing cards work well too!

Stephanie from Woodbridge, VA

I have never practiced Wicca before but regard myself as a spiritual person. Recently I have been feeling drawn to the cycles of the moon. During the full moon the other night, I was truly in awe. Is there a way to honor this or act on this feeling with Wicca? Thank you for your help!

Dear Stephanie,

Absolutely, there are plenty of ways to celebrate the full moon. Here are a few ideas: Go outside and have cakes and ale under the full moon in your yard. Light a candle and meditate on the full moon for 20 minutes. Take a ritual bath by candlelight listening to non-vocal music on the night of a full moon. Use your imagination!

Mercury in Retrograde

Our resident astrologer and tarot reader, John, wrote some great advice for the upcoming astrological event, Mercury retrograde:

"Retrograde" means the planet appears to be going backwards from our point of view. Essentially it changes direction and starts spinning the other way. For many of the outer planets, this is no big deal astrologically because many of them spend half their time in retrograde motion.

Herein lies the problem: Mercury is a personal planet in astrology. It's close to us and affects our day to day lives. Mercury rules communication matters and anything involving a computer; you would be hard-pressed today to find many areas of our lives that are NOT ruled by computers. As such, Mercury retrograde has a tendency to throw things out of whack.

What am I talking about specifically? Here are a few examples of things that can happen more frequently during Mercury retrograde:

  • Missed emails, text messages, or voicemails
  • Miscommunication of all kinds between people
  • Problems with paperwork--lost, misplaced, re-routed, etc.
  • Unexpected delays or cancellations of meetings or get-togethers
  • Computer problems of any and all stripes but usually minor ones

Mercury must slow down before it changes direction and the deceleration is called the "storm". Problems seem to occur more frequently during this time, which happens before the planet turns retrograde and the moment it starts turning back to its normal direction after this period is over. Mercury enters its storm on March 7 and goes retrograde officially on March 12. April 4 is when it goes direct, but isn't out of its storm again until April 11.

How do you deal with Mercury in retrograde? Very carefully. Here are some tips:

  • Back up all computer data regularly
  • Check all travel plans--hotels, airlines, car rentals, etc.--before you leave
  • Confirm that meetings are taking place
  • Read the fine print on every document you sign and try NOT to sign anything during this period if you can help it
  • Ensure your messages are being sent and received
  • Don't start new projects; "new" things that are started now usually have to be re-done
  • Finish up old projects and tie up loose ends
  • Be understanding of others' problems communicating or showing up late or not at all; likely it is not their fault
  • Speak carefully

Hang on tight people...sometimes it is a bumpy ride!

Christine from Virginia

My boyfriend and I have been dating for over ten months and my father hates him. I'm a college student that commutes so I still live at home. The reason my father hates my boyfriend is because he is white and that I am too young to date - I'm 19. For ten months I haven't spoken to my father because he turned his back on me. And for ten months I've been trying different things to cleanse my mind and my room. I've meditated, smudged my room, and done cleansing rituals. But nothing seems to work to get all the negative vibes in my house away from my room for more then three days. All the hate my dad puts out is suffocating me and I start to get frustrated with the wrong people. Is there anything I can do to get rid of this negative energy and to get control of my stress and frustrations?

Dear Christine,

I'm really sorry to hear that your dad doesn't like your boyfriend. I've been a teenage girl myself, and I completely understand how it feels when your parents don't like the person you love. There's a couple of things you can do to help.

Place bloodstone around your bedroom, a gemstone well known to absorb negative energy, like the negative energy both you and your dad are putting out. Make sure you cleanse the gemstones at least once a week. See this post to learn more about gemstone cleansing.

You also need to do some type of active release. Frustration and rage are active emotions and can only be gotten rid of through activity. They can't be meditated away. Take up kickboxing or go jogging/fast walking, but do something active when you're feeling enraged or frustrated.

Tigress from Abilene, TX

Is ritual bathing mandatory for all spell casting and magical workings? And if so, is there any way to simplify it, like a ritual shower with some candles lit and incense burning?

Also, does burning incense instead of burning oil make a huge difference?

Dear Tigress,

No, ritual bathing is not required before doing magick. I always hate it when books tell you to do that! A shower is not required either - at least not for magickal purposes, but for daily hygiene it is ;). The reason books suggest bathing before rituals and spells is to remove negative energy, but this can also be achieved by using chimes or burning sage.

No, there's no huge difference between burning incense or oil.
