Cynthia from Ruther Glen, VA

My birthday is 11/15/1973. What is my Wiccan name and symbol?

Dear Cynthia,

You are 38 years old and should be able to make these decisions on your own. From your birthday, I can tell you a couple of things like your soul path number, life path number, personal power number, and your astrological sign. But not your "Wiccan name and symbol."

Thomas from Salt Lake City, UT

How can I get my boyfriend, Josh, to come home? He just abandoned me when he went back to stay with his mother. I am heartbroken bad....will he come home soon? Do you know? I'm March 28th and he is March 2nd if it matters.

Dear Thomas,

I don't know if he's going to come back to you, but Josh probably tried to communicate with you what he was unhappy about before he left. Were you listening to what he was saying or was it falling on deaf ears?

India'ya from Woodbridge, VA

Hi, I came into your store with my mom a few days ago, and I was fascinated with the things I saw in there. While I was in there, a book caught my eye when it said, "only a witch can make a witch." I watched a lot of movies and shows and thought "I wanna do that," so I started to do my research on things and wanted to become a witch. I know I might be young, but why not? My point is that I was wondering if you can help me become a witch?

Dear India'ya,

With your mother's permission, I would be happy to. I think I know who you are, and if you're the person I'm thinking of, then your mom was extremely open-minded and might even be willing to walk the path with you. If the two of you want to come in so we can talk, I would be happy to point you in the right direction.

Jaszmin from San Antonio, TX

I don't know if this is a stupid question to ask, but I want to know if werewolves are real. I look them up and they say I'm a werewolf, or I know this and that and you can't trust all sites. I just want to know. Thanks.

Dear Jaszmin,

No. Werewolves, like you see in the movies, aren't real.

Anna from Fairfield, TX

I recently found a necklace charm on the road (circular, green jade or emerald stone, with a gold horse in the middle, not sure what metal). I've been cautious about putting it on, because some instinct I get from it makes my solar plexus feel ice cold. I'm trying to find some guidance to whether I should discard this charm, or if whatever properties it posesses (if any) would not cause any harm or haunting if I decided to keep it and wear it. Does this kind of feeling warn of possible danger, or what would y'all advise?

Follow-up email, 2 days later:  Why aren't y'all answering my question? But you answer kids that want to look like their teacher. A few days ago I asked if it was safe to keep a charm I found because I was confused as to why it gave me a weird chill in my solar plexus.

Dear Anna,

If you get a bad feeling from the necklace, trash it. Easy enough! If you want to keep it because it's oh-too-beautiful to throw away, then do a simple cleansing.

About your second email... Seriously? Way to be impatient! How do you know when the other question I answered was sent? Were you assuming I just received it and answered immediately? I get hundreds of questions and respond to them as often as I can and in the order I receive them. Your email was insulting and uncalled for. Patience is a virtue you need to learn.

Boshko from Tetovo, Macedonia

Am I cursed or under influence of black magic and evil forces?

Dear Boshko,

Should I be asking why you think you're cursed or under an evil influence? Have you suddenly grown horns or a tail? Is your head spinning three-hundred-sixty degrees and are you vomiting pea soup? If so, go to church! ;)

Brooke from Spotsylvania, VA

My cousin and I are just starting out and we were wondering what sites are serious and what exactly witches do. Our surrounding family is Christian, so we didn't really know who to ask. We're so glad to have found your site!

Dear Brooke,

The Witches' Voice is a great website for you to visit. Otherwise, you should pick up a few good books; I recommended some of my favorite books for beginners in this post here.

What do witches do? Today, I made breakfast, got dressed, went to work, packaged some herbs, made witch bottles, and my day's not half done! If you're asking about spirituality, all witches are different, but for the most part witches honor a Great Mother and a Great Father; have an understanding of the elements of Earth, Air, Fire, and Water; and are respectful toward themselves and others. I'm really happy you found this blog and I look forward to reading more questions from you in the future.

Estelle from Niceville, FL

My boyfriend and I agreed to let his brother move in with us after his girlfriend dumped him. It was only supposed to be maybe a couple of months until he could get on his feet. No problem, right? It's been almost half a year now. He only had a job for maybe the first month he lived with us. Now he just does odd jobs here and there and spends all his money on beer and tobacco without even offering to pitch in on utilities. He and his brother fight all the time including a few fights that got physical. I can't take it anymore. He is one of my best friends, but it's getting to the point that I don't even want to hear his voice and my boyfriend feels the same. We don't want to have to tell him to leave because he is extremely sensitive and won't take it logically. Is there a spell that will nudge him out the door to his own happiness without losing our friendship?

Dear Estelle,

I wrote this spell years ago for a friend of mine who wanted her roommate to move out. Worked like a charm!

Items needed:
1 yellow candle
1 black candle
Rose quartz

We call to our beloved Lord and Lady.
We call to the balance of the Feminine and Masculine Divine.
We call with all the hope and love within our hearts.
NAME has graced our home with his presences for LENGTH OF TIME,
But the time has come for him to leave and find a new home.
We do this out of love and compassion, with no ill will intended.
We love NAME, but he is no longer wanted in our home.
He must move on with his life and take responsibility for his own actions.
We light this black candle to protect against any negative emotions that may come.
We place this bloodstone in front of the black candle to absorb any negativity.
We light this yellow candle for NAME to feel joy, peace, and happiness.
We place this rose quartz in front of the yellow candle to send him our love.
The time has come for NAME to move out.
NAME must be completely moved out by DATE.
NAME must be completely moved out by DATE.
NAME must be completely moved out by DATE.
As we wish it, Lord and Lady, make it be.

Jasmine from Taree, NSW

I'm 15 and have recently been reading The Craft by Dorothy Morrison. I absolutely love the book except I am having trouble understanding the deities, the Goddess and, the Moon Goddess connection, etc. How do I learn about the goddesses in a way I wont be confused ? I don't have an altar setup either. Can I skip pages in the book and come back or read page by page? Please help!

Dear Jasmine,

Actually, Jasmine, Dorothy Morrison co-wrote another book called Dancing the Goddess Incarnate, which is a great way to learn about different Goddesses in a really fun way!

Yes... you can skip pages while reading The Craft and come back to them at a later time.

Setting up an altar is actually pretty easy. All you need is a flat surface and eight items. The flat surface will act as your altar. 1. An altar cloth (an old pillow case works nicely). 2. An item for Earth (like leaves from a tree outside your home). 3. An item for Air (like a lemon, lime, or orange from your kitchen). 4. An item for Fire (a small tea light). 5. An item for Water (a bowl of water). 6. An item for the Goddess (a nice picture of Artemis or Athena would be nice). 7. An item for the God (a picture of the Greenman would be a nice addition). 8. An item for yourself (something personal and something you love!).

Desiree from Manassas, VA

Hello, I have been trying the best I can for three years to study and practice the craft. I have a friend who helps me, but my father isn't happy with it. I tried to tell him it has nothing to do with the devil, but he won't believe me. Do you have any advice on how to tell someone who is a non-believer? Also, do you hold classes on Wicca?

Dear Desiree,

I wish I could tell you differently, but if he's not willing to "hear" what you are saying, then there is nothing you can do about it. Unfortunately, the media portrays witches as evil, crazy, slutty, or a combination of the three.

The best way to show your father that you aren't evil is to be a good person with a kind heart and an open mind.

Yes, I do hold classes on Wicca/Witchcraft. You can find my current class schedule on the 13 Magickal Moons website.

Blessed Be...

Jillian from Woodbridge, VA

Hello! I hope these questions are not found to be too immature. I have a few questions; how do I ask a witch what type of witch he/she is without being rude? How many different types are there? I am interested in learning how to use herbs, witch bottles, aromatherapy, and candles in my daily life. Do I have to become a witch to do so, and if so, where do I start? I would hate to do or use something incorrectly! Thank you for your time and wisdom!

Dear Jillian,

I'm happy to answer your questions for you!

1. There is no way to ask a witch what type of witch s/he is.

2. There is one type of witch... and that's a witch. In my opinion there are no good or bad witches... just good or bad people.

3. The easiest way to incorporate herbs, witch bottles, aromatherapy, and candles into your every day life is to create a altar, a sacred place which represents you and your chosen spiritual path. Start with a white altar cloth (a pillow case works really well for this!) to represent your newness to the path. Add herbs (like patchouli and lavender) to a bowl to represent Earth. Use an incense stick (aromatherapy) in a scent you really like to represent Air. Fill a bottle (witch bottle) with water and decorate it with different hues of blues to represent Water. Use different colored chime candles to represent Fire. Don't forget to add two separate items to represent the God and Goddess. I am currently using a Goddess oracle deck and a God oracle deck. Last but not least, add a personal item to represent yourself!

4. No, you don't have to "become" a witch in order to have an altar. Nor do you have to be a witch to incorporate herbs, witch bottles, aromatherapy, or candles into your everyday life!

Hope this helps!

Sarah from Exuma, Bahamas

Hi again! As an update on my question before: the uncle spirit comes to visit every now and then, but still prefers the family home, so he is there most of the time. He has shown up now and then down here at our island home, though, mostly when I'm sad or distressed. I also had a "new" spirit show up down here, so it's been interesting getting to know him. Anyway...on to my new question: I've found two perfectly preserved desiccated frogs while cleaning the house. I don't know why I didn't just bury them outside, but I didn't. They're in with the rest of my Craft supplies in little bags. I also found the cutest little house gecko in the same condition. Any ideas for uses or should I take them outside and bury them? Thanks for the input!

Dear Sarah,

Thanks for the update! I love hearing how people are doing after our advice!

Now... on to your new question. If you would like to add the frogs to your altar as a way of honoring the spirit of the frog, then by all means do. Typically, frogs represent emotional healing, transformation, and love... all great things to incorporate into your everyday magickal life!

Carlos from Allentown, Pa

I have two things I hope you can help me with.  1) I'm having trouble concentrating to do spells. Every time I try to do one, it doesn't work. :(  2) I would like to know how I can find guidance or more witches near where I live. Please help if you can. :)

Dear Carlos,

Please don't perform any more spells until you learn how to concentrate and focus! Being able to focus on your desired end result is a MUST for any and all spellwork. Start with finding a short (no more than four minutes long) guided meditation online and use it every day for at least two weeks. If you find your thoughts wandering during the meditation, then simply repeat the words being spoken in the meditation silently in your head. Once you’ve gotten the hang of using the short meditation, find a longer one to work with for two weeks. Once you are able to meditate for fifteen minutes without any loss of concentration/focus, then you can try other spells.

As for finding others in your area, there is a fantastic website you can visit called The Witches' Voice. This site has listings for local solitaries, groups, and events. All you have to do is search by your state and city.

Melissa from Alexandria, VA

Dear Witch,

I have a friend who is only working part-time and owes thousands of dollars in student loans. She doesn't want to be a millionaire, but she doesn't want to live paycheck to paycheck and worry about these pesky student loans. She still lives with her parents and wants to move out. What can I do to help her situation? Blessings.

Dear Melissa,

I would recommend your friend does a spell to get a job, including using her resume in the spell itself. She should go on a serious job hunt after that. If you want to help her out, join her in the ritual/spell to add your energy to her energy, making her spell twice as powerful.

Find a quiet place where you will not have any disturbances for at least 20 minutes.

Begin by setting a candle (an orange or green chime candle would be perfect here) in the center of your table or altar. Anoint the candle from wick to end with High John, basil, or clove oil. Place the candle on top of a copy of your updated resume, then place a magnet in front of the candle. Light the candle.

On a piece of paper, write down what you feel is the perfect job for you. Be as detailed as you can and be sure to include salary requirement and preferred work schedule. Now be realistic here... you won't find a job making $100K a year working five hours a week. Once you have finished, fold the paper four times.

Now hold the magnet and the folded paper between the palms of your hands while you focus on your dream job/company. You may find that you become more aware of your breath moving in and out of your lungs. This is a GREAT sign that you are generating energy into the paper and the magnet.

Once you feel the energy has stopped moving, light the folded paper from the lit candle. When there is nothing left but ashes from the paper and the candle has completely burned out, smear the ashes all over your resume.

Roll the resume into a cylinder, tie off both ends with green or orange ribbon/yarn, and keep it on your altar as a reminder of your spell.

I'm sure you're smart enough to know this already, but please do NOT leave the candle unattended at anytime (flame + oil + paper = very flammable).

Good luck finding your dream job!

Drake from Pico Rivera, CA

I'm planning on becoming a witch when I have time for the ceremony, then, if I can, buying and blessing a Book of Shadows for my girlfriend, who's also pagan, but I don't know how to bless another person's book. Any help? Thanks, and blessed be.

Dear Drake,

It's a very sweet idea to "bless" your girlfriend's Book of Shadows, but she should really perform that ritual herself since she will be the one using it as a magickal tool.

Bob from Carrizo, TX

What does hair attached in a thumbtack mean?

Dear Bob,

It could mean a number of things. The most probable is that someone with long hair got too close to a tack in a cork board! The least likely is someone planted it there so you would come onto this blog, ask that question, and make me laugh. ;)

Rudy from Albuquerque, NM

Can you tell me a body swap spell?

Dear Rudy,

Hon, if I knew a body swap spell, I would have probably already used it!

Patrick from Los Angeles, CA

I'm writing a screenplay for a movie about witches. I would be grateful for a little help. I need spells and incantations in Theban language written in English alphabet. Is there some kind of site or list from where I can get it? Thank you.

Dear Patrick,

There are copywriting issues attached to
using incantations and spells you've found online or in a book for a screenplay. My suggestion is to befriend a witch in LA who can write the spells and incantations for you for the appropriate level of compensation. Then simply write these into your screenplay using the Theban script, which you can find as a font for free on the internet.

Ryan from Allentown, PA

Is there any way you know a spell that would stop yourself from feeling emotions? I fear what will happen if these feelings don't stop. Please help. I don't care if it blocks the good emotions too. I just need to feel numb.

Dear Ryan,

Your question just breaks my heart. Whatever emotion you are trying to run from shouldn't be ignored because it'll just come back worse than it feels now. Please talk to someone: a counselor, a minster, a close family member, or friend.

Please, please, please get some help and keep me updated on how you're doing.

Dee from New York

Please help me... I want some advice and direction on doing a break up spell on my own. My best friend has been going out with a girl for a month and she already wronged him right in front of him. Me and others see how disgusting and how wrong she is for him but he doesn't. I believe she lies to him and has him wrapped around her finger and already has him wanting to move in with her after only one month. I also feel she's using him for his money. I just need to know a powerful break up spell I can perform myself. This break up spell will be for good reasons not for bad.... I need a fast-working one for a stubborn person. Please help me help my friend. Thank you.

Dear Dee,

Hell no, I will not help you "help" your friend! Let me explain why. The only person who would benefit from this break up is you. Your "best friend" needs your support, not your judgment. Whether he's making a bad mistake or not isn't for you to decide, since at the end of the day, he'll have to deal with the emotional scars this break up would cause. Be a better friend and leave it alone. If his girlfriend truly as bad as you say she is, he'll figure it out. The more you push him away from her, the stronger he's going to hold onto her.

Blue from NOVA

Hi Ask a Witch Team! I have recently come to understand and embrace that I am an empath. I had some difficulty trusting my intuition before and second guessed it most of the time until I realized it has really been mostly on target for as long as I can remember. Once I realized this, I began to try "listening" to it more but found myself overwhelmed and kind of scared or confused sometimes. Do you have any suggestions on how I can find some kind of balance so I can further develop it without feeling so drained and out of it? Thanks!

Dear Blue,

If you're feeling drained when using your empathic abilities, it's because you're projecting too much of your energy to obtain the information. When casting your "psychic net" try not to reach so far. Enhancing your empathic abilities is like running a marathon. You have to train for it and train your body for it. Work on it a little bit every single day. The more dedicated you are to working on it for a few minutes a day, the stronger your empathic abilities will be and the more control you will have over them. Also, remember to focus on your breathing and ground and center before and after each and every session.

Justin from Iowa Falls, IA

Why have I gotten bad feelings and bad things happening all my life, but not always to me? Also, if I think really hard and concentrate, sometimes weird things happen. What does this mean?

Dear Justin,

Bad things happen to good people just because. You can change your luck by carrying around pyrite or green aventurine in your pocket. Light yellow, green, or orange candles on your altar to represent good luck and positive energy.

If you don't want weird things to happen, don't concentrate on them happening. Like attracts like. Negative thoughts and energy attract negative energy. Positive thoughts and energy attract positive energy. Try focusing on the positive instead.

About Practically Dreaming:
In a Zodiac-based world, finding a mate is easy. Falling in love is the hard part.

Astrology influences almost everything, from career choice to where people live. Even romantic matches are based solely on astrological compatibility and determined by the infallible Council of Venus.

Animal psychic Tierra has every reason to trust the Council—save one. Her match with fellow Virgo, Evander, works better on paper than in person. But she stubbornly hangs on, believing their relationship will grow and develop, all the while trying to rationalize her feelings for Lachlan.

Veterinarian and Reiki master, Lachlan, hides a secret, which has kept him single for more than two years. This Pisces dreams of a happily ever after with Tierra, but believes it’s impossible for him.

Tierra and Lachlan must confront their doubts, differences, and society’s belief in the Council. Will they defy the odds and choose each other? Does astrological certainty eclipse the chance to fall in love?

About the Author:
Jennifer has been writing since she was in middle school. When she discovered romance novels in junior high, she knew she wanted to write them someday. Her writing remained a hobby while she studied biology and forensic DNA science. She worked as a molecular biologist and published cancer research before finally leaving the lab and taking up her laptop full time.

She currently lives in Northern Virginia with John, her husband of sixteen years. John is a professional tarot card reader and astrologer. John and Jen have three children who happen to be cats: Josephine, Morgana Madison, and Luna. Jo is a beautiful black Siamese mix who rules the house. MoMo is a possessive Scottish Fold who loves to knead Jen’s hair. Luna is the baby, an affectionate Scottish Fold who thinks her name is "Cute."

Jen’s website, blog, and contact information can be found at
