Katie from Alexandria, VA

Hello! I'm in college, and for Samhain, a friend and I have decided to leave our offering of food for the spirits in the woods near campus, and have that be our celebration. I wanted to know, is there any symbol that is connected to Samhain specifically, and do you know of something we can say, a spell or etc, when we leave our offering? Much thanks!

Dear Katie,

Although there are no symbols specifically connected with Samhain, there are
appropriate symbols you can use. A few examples of these symbols are the pentacle/pentagram, besom, and cauldrons.

I love the idea of leaving an offering out for the spirits in the woods.  I would say a little prayer of thanks to our beloved Lord and Lady for the many blessings in your life.

Bridgetta from Sterling, VA

As a witch, I am not exactly sure how to approach the questions surrounding evolution from my Atheist and Christian friends. What are your thoughts? Do pagans believe in evolution? And if you don't want to make a blanket statement, what are your thoughts or others' thoughts you've heard on the subject? Thanks!

Dear Bridgetta,

Belief in evolution (or not) doesn't really have a place in Wicca, Witchcraft, or Paganism.  Different cultures over many eras have adopted many different "creation myths."  If I were you, I wouldn't approach the subject of evolution with your friends until you decide for yourself what you believe.

Brittney from Las Vegas, NV

There is something haunting my son's room, causing him to have nightmares and making the room uncomfortable to be in. I white saged the room and re-blessed it. It has only made things worse. What can I do now to make it leave my son alone?

Dear Brittney,

Sounds like you need to do a good old-fashioned banishing ritual for your son's room.

Items Needed:
Banishing incense (Sage, lavender, frankincense, myrrh, mullein, sweetgrass)
Snowflake obsidian and tourmaline (for each windowsill in the home)
Black salt (about 4 ounces)
Sage bundle
Red candle
Black candle
  • Place all of the above items on a tray.
  • Light the charcoal.
  • Light the sage and cleanse gemstones.
  • Smudge yourself and any other participants with the sage.
  • Ground and center.
  • Light the red candle and say in a strong voice: I call upon the power and strength of the Warrior Goddess to defend me, my family, and my home!
  • Light the black candle and say in a strong voice: I call upon the power and strength of the Protector God to protect me, my family, and my home!
  • Place some of the banishing incense onto the charcoal and say in a strong voice: In the name of the Warrior Goddess and Protector God, I banish all negative energy from my home, my family, and myself!
  • Allow the room to fill with the banishing incense.
  • Draw a pentagram in the middle of the room and say in a strong voice: With the powers of Earth, Air, Fire, Water, and Spirit, I banish all negative energy from my home, my family, and myself!
  • Repeat this in each room in the home, including the basement and attic.
  • Once you have finished the last room, go to the center of the home and say in a strong voice: By the powers of Earth, Air, Fire, Water, and Spirit, this house is cleansed of all negative energy! We are defended by the Warrior Goddess! We are protected by the Protector God! You are BANISHED!
  • Place the gemstones (1 of each) in every window in the home.  If this is not possible because there are a lot of windows, place in at least one window per room.
  • With the black salt, draw a line across the outside of every entrance of your home (front door, back door, garage, etc.).

Jillian from Woodbridge, VA

I had questions about rose water. Can I make it, and if I can, how? Otherwise, where can I get some? I know a few spells that call for it, but are there any other good uses for it?

Dear Jillian,

Of course you can make your own rose water!  There are a number of different ways you can prepare it, but here is one of the easiest ways:

  • Take a dozen fresh rose petals (red, white, or pink is preferred)
  • Place them in a ceramic or non-metal pot
  • Pour enough water into the pot to cover the petals
  • Simmer on very low heat until the petals have lost their color
  • Strain
  • Store in the refrigerator!

Tim from Gainesville, VA

With Samhain coming soon, I have been trying to think of a really good ritual. I'm new at the craft, and have become more aware of what it really means, and really wanted to show it with a good ritual. Thanks.

Dear Tim,

Date: October 31 (Greater Sabbat/Cross Quarter)
Other Names: Witches' New Year, Halloween, or All Hollow's Eve
Colors: Orange, brown
Symbols: Fall fruits, pumpkins, divination sets, pictures of ancestors

Samhain, pronounced "sow-in," marks the end of the witch's year, so performing a ritual to let go of physical, emotional, mental, or spiritual baggage you may have could help you start your new year on a positive note!

This is also the day the veil between the world of the living and the dead is at its thinnest. Remember your loved ones that have past on this year by setting a place for them at your dinner table. Leave an offering of food and drink on your doorstep for those souls that still wander this world. This is also a good time to do a divinatory reading such as a tarot spread, rune casting, or crystal ball gazing.

Kat from Westlake, OH

My Aunt Anne has cancer in her lung. I was wondering if there is anything magical that could possibly help her a little. I am a little new to this on the white magic with charms and little spells. Is there anything I can do? Thanks.

Dear Kat,

I'm so sorry to hear/read about your Aunt Anne.  There are a few things you can do to help your aunt during this difficult time:

1. Find a Reiki Master or Practitioner and begin having monthly sessions. Reiki is a form of hands-on energy healing which could help your aunt with physical pain and help stabilize her emotions as well.

2. Create or buy an amulet and consecrate it with love, strength, and courage.

3. Take her to see a comedy... laughter can heal in ways many!

4. Look into black strap molasses.

I hope some of these ideas help. Please keep me updated on how you, your family, and your aunt are doing.

I am curious as to whether there is a magical or spell-related tie to the act of leaving something under another person's bed? A manipulative person that I know leaves a bottle under my partner's bed every time he visits. I don't know if this is his way of taunting me or if there is an actual magical tie to this act. When I discover it, I make it a point of removing the item and taking it out of the house.

Dear Jason,

Yes it is possible, and very likely, that the bottle this person is leaving under your partner's bed is magickally charged.

Have you asked this person WHY they are leaving a bottle under the bed?  Have you told your partner about it?

Good for you for removing the item(s) and getting it out of your home!

Kayla from Fairfax Station, VA

Dear Ask-A-Witch,

(Gosh, I write into this blog a lot!) I have two questions: 1) I've been reading up on the chakras (my sacral chakra has little activity, but that's beside my point) and I came across indigo/crystal children, and noticed I fit a definition of a crystal child (born between 1990-2010, intense stare, highly affectionate/artistic, love of music and animals, interested in rocks/stones, empathic/sensitive/forgiving of others/generous, like choosing my own meals, etc, etc, etc....). Is there a surefire way to tell if one is an indigo or crystal child? Is it even worth it to know?

2) My little brother has been depressed lately. He's irritable, he's been throwing up, losing a lot of weight. He's been going to therapy lately, but I feel like some of his chakras may be closed, and if he opens them, he'll start to feel better. Am I right to assume that? Is there anything I can do to help him? Should I ask him if he wants me to help open his chakras/meditate with me?

Dear Kayla,

I also have an intense stare, am highly affectionate/creative, have a love of music and animals, am interested in rocks/stones, am empathic/sensitive/forgiving of others/generous, like choosing my own meals, etc, etc, etc.  Only I was born long before the 1990's!

For the most part, I am going to leave my own personal opinion of indigo/crystal children out of this.  HOWEVER, I will say this... don't buy into the BS many "experts" are throwing out there.

As for your brother, if you wanted to work with him on his chakras, then that would be a wonderful bonding and healing experience for both of you.  I suggest you read Liz Simpson's The Book of Chakra Healing to help you along your path!

Nice to hear from you again!

Jessica from Ireland

Although I'm 29 years old, I have an old teddy bear that I've been very attached to from the time I was born. It sits on my bed now and is still my most beloved possession.

I recently found out I'm pregnant, and my husband suggested I give the teddy bear to the baby when she is born. But it's really old and the material is delicate, so I was going to put it beside the baby's crib instead. Since I spent so many childhood years holding the bear for comfort, I feel as though it holds a great deal of my personal and spiritual energy and is in a sense a magickal object already. Do you know of any protection spells I could also put on the bear to watch over my baby while she sleeps?

Dear Jessica,

This might be the sweetest question I have ever received!!!

You're right in thinking your bear is already a magickal object, and a powerful one at that. Because your bear is in a delicate state, I suggest you buy your daughter her own bear, similar to yours but not exactly the same.

Enchant her brand new bear with protective magick.  One way to do this is by adding a sachet inside of the bear.

List of supplies:
Black velvet bag
Amethyst chips (protection)
Citrine chips (anti-nightmare)
Powdered lavender (soothing)
Powdered chamomile (calming)
Powdered cut sage (protection)
Powdered St. John's Wort (healthy/happy brain)
Lock of your hair (protection and love)
Lock of your husbands hair (protection and love)

Put everything together inside of the bag. Open the bear at a seam, put in the bag (preferably in the middle stomach area), and sew the seam closed.  Hold the bear in your arms, against your heart, with your palms on the bear and say the following incantation three times:

Lord and Lady hear my plea,
Keep my daughter safe for me.
As you watch her grow from above,
Fill her with your protective love.

Lauren from Woodbridge, VA

Dear Witch,

While walking the path, I find that trying to achieve balance and becoming the witch I want to be is harder than I thought. In this particular case, I find myself thinking awful things about others all the time. I know that even our thoughts can have karmic retribution, so I have been trying to ask for forgiveness every time I think something negative; I even tried wearing a rubber band on my wrist and pulling it every time I think of something negative.

Well now I am to the point where I feel as if I may be spreading myself too thin. Any advice? Thanks!

Dear Lauren,

First and foremost, let me just say I really admire you for trying to change your negative thought patterns.  One of the hardest things we can do is try to change the way we think... so GOOD FOR YOU!

Secondly, being a good person/witch can be really difficult in our society because we are constantly surrounded by negativity. We watch violent shows, listen to negative people on our radios, and drive in bumper-to-bumper traffic with rageaholics  surrounding us.

Do me a favor and take off the rubber band because it's just going to cause you to have even more negative thoughts.  Instead, try to figure out WHY you are feeling so negative right now.  Are things not going right in your life? Are you working too much? Are you allowing yourself down time to have some FUN with friends or family?

Take a few minutes every day to ground and center. When you find yourself becoming really negative, take a moment to focus on your breathing and think about why you are feeling so negative at that moment.

Keep in mind... the happier you feel/are the more positive you will be and think.

Axel from Seminole, FL

I am interested in becoming a Wiccan. I've always had a strong connection with nature, and Christianity was never really for me. I just don't know where to begin. Who should I talk to? Are there any books that could help me out?

Dear Axel,

There is a fantastic website you can visit called The Witches' Voice to help you find others in your area. This site has listings for local solitaries, groups, and events. All you have to do is search by your state and city.

Here are a few of my favorite beginner books:

Raymond Buckland's Complete Book of Witchcraft is a great resource. Although this book was written in the 1970's and does reference “skyclad” a lot, the information and history of witchcraft he shares is timeless. Buckland's Complete Book of Witchcraft has a serious, no-nonsense undertone as well as comprehensive lessons and assignments.

Another book you should read is Dorothy Morrison's The Craft - A Witch's Book of Shadows. Dorothy has a way of writing that speaks true to the simplicity and passion we should have for the craft. She also has a way of writing invocations that are very poetic and powerful.

Last but not least, I would recommend Scott Cunnningham's Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner. Most of us start off and remain solitaries. Cunningham's book is one you can refer to no matter how long you remain in the craft.

If you have any witchy friends, most of them have all three of these books sitting somewhere in their bookcase.

Paula from Louisville, KY

I have an odd scenario. A man stopped in front of my house on Sunday night around 8:30 and drew a symbol on my sidewalk (all the while muttering to himself). It was an eight with a circle around it with a small line coming off the circle pointing towards my house. I saw this while I was taking my dog outside to use the bathroom. He was briskly walking along when he came in front of my neighbor's house and then seemed to pause. He walked a few more steps, stopping in front of my house. Then back to her house, lingering for a few moments. Then acted as if nothing happened and started walking again. Then he stopped mid stride to kneel down and draw the symbol. He then proceeded on for at least two blocks in that same brisk stride. I feel like it's crazy to think he was anything but just one of the many oddities we have in our city, but it felt so weird. My dog did her "I'm scary bark" only right before he drew the symbol. I wouldn't think it was possible for someone to hex my house with me standing there and watching them do it, but....could it be? I know this isn't the place for this type of question, but I really have no idea who to ask. If you can't answer, could you maybe give me some advice on who to ask?

Dear Paula,

To the best of my knowledge, the symbol you've described does not have any negative meaning to it.  The number eight symbolizes perfection, transformation, new life, and Divine union.  The infinity symbol (which looks like an eight) means there are no limitations.

Unless you've suddenly had a run of bad luck, I'd say you've had an encounter with an "oddity."

Neil from Lutz, FL

I am a clairvoyant. I call myself a reader. I can feel and hear energy. I can also heal in some ways. I consider myself a warrior healer, if you must put a label on it, LOL. I was wondering if there are people I can talk to one on one and in person ?

Dear Neil,

There is a fantastic website you can visit called The Witches' Voice which might be able to help you find other "warrior healers" in your area. This site has listings for local solitaries, groups, and events. All you have to do is search by your state and city.

Candace from Newport News, VA

I was just curious as to what herbs could be brewed into a tea to help with bronchitis.

Dear Candace,

There are a number of herbs you can use to help ease bronchitis.  Here is a great article from
Natural Remedies for Bronchitis

Please remember herbal remedies should not be taken in lieu of modern medicine. If your cough continues for more than 7 days, please see your regular doctor!
