Aparna from Mumbai, India

Blessings! I had a childhood dream of becoming a witch. Now I am 14 years old and I have been searching the internet for spells from which I can become a witch. But I need someone to guide me. I don't know where to start. Please help me.

Dear Aparna,

Being a witch is a lot of responsibility and can't be done with a simple spell.  But there is a great book called Teen Witch: Wiccan for a New Generation by Silver RavenWolf which can help you make your dream of becoming a witch true!

Al from Spokane, WA

This is a generally more philosophical question. I've done a lot of reading about the Craft/Wicca (I'm not sure what you prefer to call it...?) and I've found a lot that really speaks to me and makes sense on a very intuitive level.

There is one aspect that keeps sticking with me, though. I've come to understand the Lord and Lady as male and female personifications of the divine as they have appeared to varied cultures and paths throughout history, with all faces being different aspects of the same male or female half of the divine. (I'm not sure how you understand them or what others believe, although all paths are equally valid for their believers...)

The question/sticking point for me is this: the Craft seems to emphasize fertility, life, and procreation at the sabbats and through the wheel of the year. The male and female halves of the divine personify and, for some, very literally enact that, creating life. I guess what I wonder is--where does homosexuality fit in? For a gay man such as myself, I wonder what my place is and what "authorities" would argue about non-heterosexuals when it comes to the great wheel of life and death.

It may be that this is a question that I need to answer for myself by discovering my own mysteries. Even if that’s the case, though, I wonder what your opinion is and if you know of any writings that you would recommend on the subject?

Dear Al,

I can definitely see your concern, but let me reassure you that there are MANY homosexual practitioners of Wicca/Witchcraft/Paganism! The focus on fertility is actually (or should actually be) about the cycle of life... birth, life, death, and rebirth. Only some traditions focus on the joining of the Lord and Lady as a sexual union.  Many tradition see Their union as a balance, an equality, of the masculine and feminine.

A couple of books for you to look at are Wicca for Men by A.J. DrewSons of the Goddess: A Young Man's Guide to Wicca by Christopher Penczak, and The Path Of The Green Man: Gay Men, Wicca and Living a Magical Life by Michael Thomas Ford.

I hope these books help you on your path, and please feel free to contact me with more questions.

Namaste and Blessed Be!

Betty from Boise, ID

About two years ago, my aunt and uncle went to prison, so my parents took in two of my cousins. There are five siblings altogether, and their whole family (except the dad) is into witchcraft (the Mexican kind called brujeria) and they like black magic. Well, at first everything was fine between my whole family, however I was alienated by everybody. Skip forward one and a half years, and my parents finally saw what I did, as did the rest of my family. Unfortunately, a series of events happened. We've lost money and got into a horrible car accident among other things. Nobody got hurt, we walked out of it, yet the truck we were in is horribly trashed. My dad called my grandfather, who is into witchcraft, and he told my dad that it was my cousins doing it. The ones living with us are the messengers. He also said that they sprinkled some sort of black salt in our house. Another Wiccan also told us that they hid a ouija board in our house, and until we find and get rid of it, the hex will not go away. Me and my brother looked for it this afternoon but couldn't find it. Please help - they already tried to kill us. I'm worried this will go ever further!

Dear Betty,

I have a number of questions I really need you to answer before I can start helping you:

Why are the cousins after you and your family?
Are they still living in the home?
Why were you alienated by everyone?
What is the message the "messengers" are supposed to be giving you?

Please answer these questions as soon as possible (along with  your email address) and I'll get back to you ASAP.

Phillip from Muldrow, OK

Greetings! I have a friend who has seizures. What herbs should I give him to help with his problem?

Dear Phillip,

Sorry, hon... but I won't give you any herbal advice for someone who has seizures. He needs to see a doctor, and he needs to be on medication.

Blaire from Centreville, VA

My friend is having her birthday at the end of September. I would like to make a cat magick candle for her. What ingredients (herbs, oils, stones) would you recommend? Thanks!

Dear Blaire,

Well, aren't you a sweet friend!

For the oil, I would use cypress, and cat's eye would be a great gemstone to use. And for the herb... why, catnip, of course!!!

Kay from Brooksville, FL

I've heard about elemental Wiccans and I was wondering what it all means. And I'm a Scorpio, so I was wondering what element I am.

Dear Kay,

Elemental Wiccans typically work with a specific element (Earth, Air, Fire, Water). Sometimes the element they work with corresponds with their astrological sign.
Scorpios are water signs, so you're a Water Witch ;-)

Michelle from New Orleans, LA

I'm a newbie and a bit confused. As an aromotherapist, I learned that only a few essential oils should touch the skin. Does this apply when dressing a candle? If so, what should I wear/use when dressing a candle? Thanks!

Dear Michelle,

When dressing a candle, you want to have the oil pre-blended if you are going to use a combination. Wear gloves or use a Q-tip if you use pure essential oils.

Juliet from Pompton Plains, NJ

I want to do a spell for a job I want very much. I have a candle I was given at Christmas time. It's mostly green with an outside coating of red, green, and gold stripes. All these colors are good. Can I use this multi-colored candle or just use a white one I have here? Also, do you have a good spell for this, or can you tell me what I can carve on it? Also, I have a pre-made money oil, but I also have pure frankincense and other essential oils. Which oil would be the best to use? Thank you so much.

Dear Juliet,

Yes... red (determination), green (job), and gold (money) are great colors to use for getting a job. Of course you can use multi-colored candles for any magickal/ritual workings you are performing. Carve into the side of the candle your salary requirement (be realistic), preferable hours, or the name (if you have something specific in mind) of the company you would like to work with.

Annoint the candle with your pre-made money oil from wick to end (moving towards your body).

Keep me updated on your job search and good luck!

Hello Witch! I would like to inquire about "weather magic". What does it entail, and how can I learn more about it? Blessed Be!

Dear Melissa,

Why do you want to learn about weather magic?

Courtney from Kingston, NH

I am writing on behalf of a group of us that work together in a stressful, unhealthy working environment due to our boss. We all enjoy working together, but the stress our boss puts on us is worrisome. Is there a good spell to protect us as a group from her or even a spell to get her removed from her position? It has been three long years of suffering with her, and we all work so well together and care so much for one another and are at our wits end. The higher-up won't listen to us so we need to do something! Please help! Thank you!

Dear Courtney,

Yikes... I hate bosses like that.  Get a spray bottle with regular water and add a few drops (maybe 10 each) of lavender and sage essential oils. When the boss is out of the office for the day, spray it in her office (rug, chair, door, and walls). You can also  hide bloodstone in her office to absorb her negative energy.

Start with this and see if it helps... if not... write back and we'll figure out a ritual or spell for you to use!

Joan from Richmond, VA

Hello, Witch! I am an applicant for an agency, but the application process can take up to a year. Is it ethical to want to expedite the process? If so, how can I approach it? If not, no worries! Thank you! Many blessings.

Dear Joan,

It's not unethical to expedite the process... but if you are talking about a federal agency, then there really is no point. No offense to our government, but they aren't known for their fast action!

There are many contributing factors when it comes to working with the government. If your application requires a background check or a security clearance, then those can take months to perform.

Hello! I would love if Samantha, John, and Jennifer discuss how they got into the spiritual/Wiccan path and give advice to those starting out. I guess I'm requesting this as a way for the readers to learn about the awesome staff at 13 Magickal Moons! Blessings!!

Dear Melissa,

Great suggestion! Look for it coming soon on the Meet the Ask A Witch Team page!

StargazerLily from Woodbridge, VA

Hello. This past weekend I had a traumatic experience where I felt my psyche and free will were attacked. I was curious if you knew of any cleansing and magickal defense spells I could do to clear negativity and block any attacking energy.

Dear StargazerLily,

I am so sorry to hear you had a traumatic experience. I would recommend performing a cleansing ritual by taking a warm (not super hot) bath with lavender and sage. As you are rinsing your body in the bath water, visualize the negativity washing away into the water.

Buy a pendant with black tourmaline (or carry the gemstone with you) and consecrate it with protection.

Let me know how you are doing!

S from Yonkers, NY

I am trying to help my ex-lover. He is currently being used by his ex-wife for his money. She has somehow blinded him, and he is having a hard time finding love. I think she has done something to make him like this. I want to help him awaken or find his better sense. I don't want him back. In fact, I now prefer him as a friend. I just don't want to see him struggle and hurt because I care about him. I am new to this and am interested in white magic. How can I help him?

Dear S,

I would suggest a hand-parting ceremony to break the ties/binds between your ex-lover and his ex-wife.  A hand-parting ceremony is a sort of releasing spell which would break the commitment and vows he once made to her.

Have him get a copy of his marriage license, the vows he said to her, and a picture from their wedding day. The picture should be one of just the two of them together. Have him write down his REAL feelings about the relationship, the ending of the marriage, and why he wants to be released from his vows. After he has finished this, have him tie everything together and burn it in a fire-safe dish.

Remember HE has to be the one to perform each and every action. The letter/note he writes should remain private.

Best of luck to him!

Jordy from Melbourne, Australia

Hey there! Recently, a friend has been replacing the headstone on her grandmother's grave. During the removal of the first, six bottles were found underneath the headstone, buried in the earth. They were not there before the headstone, and a crack in the stone just large enough to fit them through was found (they were fairly small) however they were actually buried, and we are unsure of how this is possible. Also, within the bottles were identical notes, with four names (same surname), Medicare numbers, birthdays, and mobile phone numbers. The grave and headstone were from the 1960's so there is no way there could be mobile numbers back then. The bottles were also filled with a sweet lemony-smelling oil. I dont have any other details of burial, appearance of the bottles, or if anything else was contained in them. Could this be a spell?

Dear Jordy,

It definitely sounds like a spell to me... but not a harmful one. It sounds as if the person(s) were using your grandmother's grave for protection.

Have you thought about calling the cell phone numbers or looking at your genealogy to see if they are distant relatives?

Chardonnay from Arlington, TX

I was once studying to be a witch/Wiccan when I was 12. It was lonely at first, but I was happy. Very happy. I had found Wiccan friends and we all had the best times, lots of friends, and life seemed just great. But then my mother convinced me it was wrong and I needed to be Christian. Years later, I've lived as a Christian, but I'm not happy at all. Life seems empty and hard, and I'm always looking back wondering what went different. Do you think this means that I was on the right path before and need to go back? By the way, I'm 16 now.

Dear Chardonnay,

If you are that unhappy being a Christian, then maybe there is a new path for you to follow. If Wicca made you feel happy, then that could be the path for you.  Perform a ritual and see if you still feel the connection you did when you were 12.

Blessed Be...

Alex from Salonica, Macedonia

Hello from Greece. About a year ago, I lost an expensive old coin in my house. I believed it was in my village. About a week ago, I went there and I didn't find it. :( I am very sad because I can't find the same coin again, so I want your help. :( I tried all I can to do. I tried the pendulum. The pendulum says that the coin is in the third drawer in my bedroom. I searched there and I found another coin. :S I tried some other spells like to tie a towel. Nothing. I promised a fanouropitta (pie) to an Orthodox Saint who helps to find items (Saint Fanourios). Nothing. :( I am really, really very sad. Can you help me, please? Give me an advise if you can. :( Thank you very much and cordial greetings from Greece!

Dear Alex,

Hello, Greece!!!

Sounds like the Universe has "borrowed" your coin and will probably return it to you at a later date, when you least expect it.  Make the fanouropitta anyway and set it out for Saint Fanourios!

Tyler from Baltimore, MD

Is there a way to prevent spirits from possessing us? Like runes, symbols, or items? I was curious because I feel as if there is one following me that means me harm.

Dear Tyler,

Yes, you can use a religious symbol of your chosen spirituality and consecrate it for protection. If you wanted to use gemstones, then blue opal, bloodstone, and black tourmaline are great choices. For a rune, I would use Elgaz for protection.

Don't forget to protect your home as well. Cleanse the entire house using white sage or chimes, starting in the lowest level and moving through every room. You can also place black salt along every entrance into the home (windows, doors, and garages), and place black tourmaline on every windowsill.

Amanda from Arlington, TX

I really do not know where to turn, but I hope you can help. If not, maybe point me to someone who can.

I am sure my daughter is a changling, and have been sure of this since she was a newborn. I do not mean any modern interpretation, but a real flesh and blood fairy living as my child. I love her and have respected Fae my whole life. In fact, my daughter was named Daisy Fae because we felt she was more Fairy than anything else.

Since her birth, we have noticed more Fairy activity in our home. This has been mostly welcomed, but we also know that not all Fae are good. Recently, my daughter left to go to her grandmother's house and left behind a little fairy. It is white (I have seen it) and the cats will not leave it alone. She is ten, and when I asked Daisy about it, she told me, "Oh that is my friend!" We have left out fruit and honey for it, and talk to it often.

Recently it has gotten mean, and I do not know why. It is attacking the pets, but I assumed that is because they will not leave it alone. Last night, it started messing with me. I think it has been using some kind of glamour on me, and I get a feeling of dread when going into the pantry that it seems to be living in. It has gotten so bad that I do not like to even go into my kitchen. I keep seeing things move and stepping on large pieces of glass. I have no idea where the glass comes from.

I do not want to get rid of it, but I want to know how to appease it. I have recently given him honey but that does not seem to be enough. Do you have any suggestions?

Dear Amanda,

Time to get the fairy out of the house.  Start decorating in cast iron, a metal the Fae HATE and avoid! Be sure to place cast iron in every room in the house and in the yard.

Kaylan from Richmond, VA

Hello, I'm starting to get into Wicca and I'm just concerned about actually working spells. I'm scared I'm going to do it wrong and open up a door for evil spirits or demons to enter my house. Is this even possible? I just keep hearing people say that sometimes people who practice witchcraft unintentionally open a doorway for spirits to enter their home. I appreciate your reply!

Dear Kaylan,

Don't ever perform a spell until you feel confident in doing so. One way to keep yourself safe when performing spells is to cast a circle before performing the spell and taking the circle down once you have finished.

Good luck!

Desperate from Acton, ON, Canada

I am a Whyte Wiccan witch. Can I do a dark spell on my ex daughter-in-law? My son is sick and the stress is too much. I don't want to kill her or anything, just remove her from the way for a while... a broken hip while dancing drunk with her 28 year-old boyfriend. She is black. Will the laws of three or karma punish me????

Dear Desperate,

Yes... Karma will definitely b*tch slap you if you perform a dark spell on your ex daughter-in-law.

Shame on you for wanting her to break her hip.

Susan from Hilliard, OH

Hi Ask-A-Witches! What herbs and gemstones would be good to use in a spell for weight loss? Thanks and blessed be!

Dear Susan,

Citrine is a fantastic stone to help with weight loss and red jasper is great for helping to break bad habits.  Red clover is a wonderful herb to help suppress the appetite. Combine these three items in an orange or black bag. Charge the bag with your intention and carry it with you at all times.

TJ from Columbus, OH

I'm curious how to properly dispose of spellwork items without causing destruction to the spell? I recently did a tarot spell to gain employment and was offered a job within a week. I placed the corresponding tarot cards in a cloth bag with herbs and gemstones in it. Now that I have the job, I want to get my tarot cards out of it to use, but I don't want the spell to fall apart and I lose the job. (I hope that makes sense). It could be my imagination or coincidence, but I once used a tarot spell to find a house, found and moved into the perfect home, took my cards out of the bag thinking the spell was complete, and a few months later the landlord/owners decided to sell and needed me to move. I've often wondered what to do with items used in spells once I've received what I have wished for, for example candle wax and herbs. Thanks for your insight!

Dear TJ,

When it comes to working with the Tarot magickally, I suggest making a digital copy of your deck so all you have to do is print out the cards you need to work with. This way you can dispose of the remains without having to buy a new tarot deck with each spell/ritual you perform.

As for disposing the rest of your spells, I always like to either bury it in my garden or toss the (biodegradable, not harmful) remains into a moving body of water, like a river or creek.

Hillary from Singapore

Hello, my name is Hillary and I am working on my personal project. Well actually I haven't gotten it started and I am really into doing extremely well. I have thought of three ideas and I really don't know which one to choose: success, genetics, or the world/global warming. I want the idea that I choose to be different than other projects and stimulating to viewers. I have asked the universe to send me signs on what I should do, but I don't know. Most of the signs point at success, but I am not sure. Please give me some advice on what I should do. Is there something I can wear or do during the course of creating this project? I just really want it to be outstanding.

Dear Hillary,

You asked the Universe to send you signs on which path to follow and the Universe is telling you success. So my advice is to listen to the Universe!

Wear a symbol of your faith and consecrate it with the energies of success, creativity, strength, and determination.  If you want your dream to come true, then don't be afraid of working hard for it!

Ruby from Seattle, WA

I have had an on/off relationship with my boyfriend for two years. When I think I'm over him and ready to be with someone else, I do a spell to bring me my ideal mate and he always ends up coming back to me even though I didn't ask for him! Why does he keep coming back to me?

Dear Ruby,

He keeps coming back to you because deep in your heart you want HIM to come back.  Why do I say that? Because you say "I think I'm over him" and not "I'm over him."  I suggest you sever the ties between the two of you and truly move on.

Robert from Gadsen, AL

I am a sword and knife collector. My walls are covered with them. I just noticed that all of the blades were pointing to the left and wondered what this says about me.

Dear Robert,

For one thing, it says that you are organized and like things looking neat and orderly. Another thing it could say about you is that you have embraced your feminine side as the left usually represent the Goddess, the subconscious mind, and feminine energy.

Karyn from Williamsburg, VA

I am going to apologize ahead of time if the wording for this question isn't that great, but here we go. Two nights ago, I had a dream (or I think it was a dream) that I was in a place that had a green sky, a lot of swamps, and all the food was rotten. In this dream, I (or at least a part of me) was apparently banished to this place for 17 years. From what I can remember, at the end of the dream, I came up to a door that comes back to the real world. The door had a mirror on it, so I got a good look at this part of myself before I went through. In the reflection I saw myself, but at the most I was 105 pounds (in reality, I am pushing 174 pounds), I had short red hair, and no glasses (I started wearing corrective lenses about 17 years ago). Apparently this "other" me in my dream is a narcissistic b***h. In the end, she (or I) went through the door and then I woke up. So I guess my question is was it a dream or was it some twisted form of reality? Any information and/or advice about this would be greatly appreciated.

Dear Karyn,

Sounds like you had a dream to me... a crazy one... but a dream nonetheless.

Your dream reads as a warning (swamp lands, rotten food, severe weight loss) about losing yourself, possibly to negativity. Keep in mind the law of attraction - like attracts like. Positive energy attracts positive energy and negative energy attracts negative energy.

Sarah from Exuma, Bahamas

Good Morning Witches!

This is not a question just a hello and thank you for this service that you provide the community. Also, to the extremely impatient young lady: chill, girlfriend. These are busy Witches and there is no way for the rest of us to know how many other emails they are getting and what other demands on their time they have. It took nearly two weeks for my question to be answered when first I wrote, and you know what I did when I needed to make a decision before the Witches could answer me? I made a decision on my own! I went with my gut. When they were able to answer my question, it was pretty cool to read someone else's thoughts on the matter, but in the end, what counted was my gut feeling and my actions. You owe these generous Witches an apology. As mean as those words may sound, I say them in love. Learn to trust your own instincts.

Dear Sarah,

Currently, the Ask A Witch team has received so many questions, it would take nearly two months to answer them all! In an effort to answer people more quickly, we're answering a question every single day until we bring the wait time back down to only a few weeks. We generally answer questions in the order we receive them, unless we hear from someone in a true emergency, in which case we try to write back immediately. We're thrilled with the response to the Ask A Witch program and the opportunity to help so many people! In fact, we've just received our 20,000th page view!

MoonShadow from Manchester, NH

I had a tarot deck that was passed down to me (75 years) from my great-aunt, and during a move, I must have lost them or worse (they are in the hands of another), someone took them. My question is what tarot deck should I buy? The ones that are out there are so...plain, regular. I'm looking for an antique deck with history and feelings... Many blessings!

Dear MoonShadow,

I am so sorry to hear you lost this family heirloom!

There are so many decks out there that it's hard for me to suggest just one. I would suggest starting with the Aeclectic Tarot site, which has thousands of deck images you can look through, and quite a number of them have old world or antique-style themes. Aeclectic will give you a way to figure out what you like, and it also has deck reviews so you can get an expert opinion as well. But in the end, go with your gut. The only caveat I would give is that if you are a beginner tarot reader, I would start with the Rider-Waite Tarot Deck. It's a classic for a reason.

I don't know if you have any tarot groups locally, but here in our area we have a tarot society that meets once a month. Many folks there are collectors and routinely give away decks they no longer need. Perhaps one you like might find its way to you that way.

Best of luck in finding the deck for you!
