Maxine from Newman, CA

Can someone please help give me guidance? I have power that I can't explain coming from within, and can only control sometimes. I have had several strange things happen. Several times I've taken a bath with nothing but white candles lit and levitated in water. When I got out and tried turning the lights on, they wouldn't work. When I would come back sometime later, the lights would work fine. I also have a power to think about something, and the next person I see will bring me what I think of, or say the thoughts I'm having, with them having no clue. I've also out of no where said the thoughts that the people around me have had, without me knowing, and them ending up looking at me bewildered. Also, when I was a young girl, I had a step-parent who wasn't the parent of the year. Her hair started to fall out after I had thoughts of anger and pain from her come into my mind. I went to take her laundry out of the dryer, and these huge balls of hair the size of tennis balls fell out on me. I didn't use magic with her. It all came from my mind. Can someone please help answer what these events are or what I'm doing?

-------------

Dear Maxine,

Levitating in water is called floating.

Your power is called psychic ability. Being able to know what someone is thinking or to know what someone is about to bring are forms of psychic abilities. This means your subconscious mind is able to read the energy of people and places you're around. As for your stepmother, I wouldn't be bragging about that. It's pretty horrible. You may not have used magick to cause the hair loss, but your constant negative thoughts about her and sending her thoughts of anger and pain could very well have made her hair fall out.

Maribeth from Ellwood City, PA

I suffer from severe joint pain in my hands and feet. I also have fear and anxiety and have had financial difficulties for a long time. I was beautiful, married, in good health, and okay in finances, but everything has gone south. I have always believed in Wicca and am a very spiritual person. In short, I need lots of help. Yes, I live alone and have six cats. Please, can you do a ritual/spell for me to help heal my life? I will do what I can in the meanwhile, but this is very urgent. Thank you and blessings to you.

-------------

Dear Maribeth,

I'm sorry honey, but I can't. I'll be happy to light a candle for you on my altar to help you find your way, but at the end of the day, any spell or ritual work to improve your life has to come from you. This may sound crazy, but start by putting an offering bowl on your altar to give thanks to the divine for the little you do have right now.

Like attracts like. If you're a negative person wallowing in negativity, negativity will come to you. It will surround and choke you. If you're a positive person who appreciates the small things in life, then some occasional bad things may happen to you, but positive energy will usually come to you instead.

Francois from Washington, DC

What can you do with magic?

I check in here now and then because some of the questions are interesting, and some are amusing. A lot of people ask for pretty outlandish things like the ability to make it snow at will, control fire, or grow bat wings. "No" seems like a pretty expected reply to whether that can be done for them through magic.

Other things get a yes though... questions about how to deal with person X who may have put curse Y on me, for instance.

What I'm trying to understand is where and how someone might draw the line between realistic ideas for spellcraft and between things that are pure fantasy. I'm the furthest thing from an expert (I'm not even Wiccan, though it interests me and I've read several books on it). However, up till now my understanding of magic has been that it's almost a way to supplement things that are broadly already (at least potentially) in your control - a way to transform your will into reality, so to speak.

Academic success, for example. That's something that heavily depends on what you do (or fail to do). A spell/ritual for success on a test might have the goal of strengthening your intent, and helping you focus on those things you had to do as a result. By focusing more you do better, and it's entirely realistic (to me) for someone to say that the spell/ritual played a role in their success.

Success in job hunting is a bit less directly in your control (you're competing against other applicants, and are subject to the whims of individual interviewers, etc), but I understand magic being used for things like that as well, since your own actions, effort, and intentions are going to still be heavily responsible for the outcome.

To me though, situations where people are worried they've been cursed by someone else, etc, seem categorically different. These are situations where you're worrying almost entirely about someone else's intentions, right? I have a harder time accepting that someone could work a ritual that would have an impact on someone else's actions or desires. The same goes for questions regarding love spells (leaving aside ethical questions as to whether that kind of a spell is proper in the first place). I mean, you can focus on your own reality and intent ad nauseum, but how can you expect your own private spells/rituals to alter the intent of another person? Magic to make me focus on the desires of my partner more strongly seems real to me, because it's concerned with what I can do. Magic to make my partner become more deeply enamored with me strikes me as fantastical though, because it's focused on their will and their intent.

Also - using the above academic success example - what's the difference between someone using a spell/performing a ritual for success, and someone waking up early every day to get coffee, clear their head, figure out what needs to be done and then focus in on it? Would it be wrong to think that the second situation is almost just magic/ritual by another name?

Sorry if this is a bit long - and I really hope it doesn't come of as being critical or anything. I'm just interested in better getting my head around the the concept of exactly what magic is regarded as. Maybe my own present understanding is entirely off-base with what most practitioners think in the first place?

Thanks for your time, and thanks for this blog! It's really interesting to keep up with.

-------------

Dear Francois,

Fantastical magick, aka movie magic, is any form of energy that simply cannot happen in reality. Fireballs shooting from the hand, freezing hands, blowing shit up, flying through the air, and teleportation... those types of magick just don't exist. They require a bend in reality that is just not possible.

Real magick is in fact real because when a person is working a spell or performing a ritual, not only are they focusing their intent to a specific outcome, but they are raising their energy and directing that energy out into the universe to create a specific outcome. The very fuel of magick, aka energy, is the intent and the will behind it.

Using your example of the spell to pass a test, the practitioner would raise a whole bunch of energy to help them comprehend the questions and respond in a coherent way. Studying in conjunction with the energy work makes passing the test more possible.

A better example is the job hunting spell. Person A and B are both going for the same job. Their resumes are similar, both asking the same salary requirement, but person A has decided to cast a spell to make them more desirable then person B, giving them a leg up in the job hunting process. Possible employers will be more attracted to A because of the added energy.

In regards to a love spell or focing a person to do your bidding, it is more complicated. Person A's need for person B to be more enamored with them might work for a short amount of time, but eventually person B's original will overcomes person A's desire. It's the same with binding spells. Person A wants to bind person B from doing drugs. This may work for a short amount of time, perhaps long enough to get person B some type of help, but sooner rather than later, B's need for the substance will outweigh person A's need for them not to have it.

Everybody wants to blame their shitty life on someone having cast a curse on them. The truth is 99.9% of people have not been cursed. People are too busy wallowing in their own self pity to be concerned with making others miserable by cursing them. Some fraudulent psychics love to tell people they've been cursed because the psychic can make a few extra thousands on the side by "removing" your curse. The two ploys we hear about most are the family curse and the curse of having a demon attached to you. Both are scams.

In answer to your ritual question, yes, your morning routine is considered a ritual, but not a spell. Your morning ritual helps you prepare for the day and stay focused on what you need to achieve that day. Spell work is focusing your energy and sending that energy out to achieve a goal.

I hope I answered all of your questions. I really enjoyed taking the time to think the answer out.

Tina from Franklin, TN

I recently moved to the Franklin, TN area. One day as I was going to a home to look at it to lease, I suddenly knew I had seen the home in a dream. Upon entering the home, I felt a doom feeling and suddenly became sick to my stomach. I knew there was something evil in the house or with the agent showing it. I asked her if the house had an attachment. She told me no. I said do you? She then told me that she had an exorcism done on herself but needed another one, and she asked how I knew. I told her I had gifts. My question is why would she be burning sage and rosemary in the garage and coffee beans on the kitchen stove? Was this for a spell? I appreciate your help!

-------------

Dear Tina,

Sage and rosemary  are cleansing herbs, and the thick smoke helps remove negative energy. Coffee beans on the stove is a way to entice potential buyers by making them feel more at home with homey scents.

Bound in the Broom Closet from Virginia

Here it goes.

I live in a small town right in the middle of the Bible Belt where talk is cheap when the story is good. Everyone knows everybody's business and secrets don't stay secrets long.

I have been a solitary eclectic practitioner for about two years now, so I am still new to my path, however only several close friends and my partner know of my journey. I have spoken with my mother about it a few times, but she does not know the extent of my beliefs. I feel she would be more understanding than my father. They are both Southern Baptists, (just as I was raised) but my mother has always had psychic inclinations that seem to make her more open to diverse thought about metaphysics.

Here is where it gets interesting... I am a Middle School English Teacher.

I truly want to come out of the broom closet to my family, friends, and community, but I know the effects this could have on my career and professional life. So many people in this area do not understand that witchcraft is not of the devil, and most folks around here wouldn't want a witch teaching their "sweet little darlin's."

I don't want to be the center of a public school "witch hunt." I know there is legislation in place to protect my rights, however in southern "good ol' boy" politics, not much can stop a decision of the school board.

What do I do?!

-------------

Dear Bound in the Broom Closet,

I would love to tell you to be bold, brave, and ride your broomstick right out of that closet, but the truth is, it could definitely ruin your career. People like to pretend that they're evolved, but the truth deep down inside is that they don't like anyone who's not identical to them. Our Lord and Lady do not require us to share with the world what spiritual path we practice. It's more important that you continue to practice with love and devotion than to come out of the closet and live in fear.

Jaycee from Virginia

Hello, I had a question about the pointed masks that look like bird's beaks. I have seen several TV shows that show witches wearing masks over their faces. Is this just something they do in Hollywood movies or does it have some real symbolism? For example, in the television show American Horror Story, Coven in episode 1 they showed a coven of witches with masks on their faces with long pointed noses or beaks. Thanks for your help, I am just wanting to know if the mask actually has some symbolism to it.

Masks on American Horror Story, Coven
-------------

Dear Jaycee,

Witches originally wore masks as a way of hiding their true identities. If anyone snuck up on them, they wouldn't be able to identify them. This would also include covering their hair.

As for the specific mask seen in American Horror Story, Coven, and its symbolism, here's a link to a Wikipedia entry for plague doctors, who wore beak-like masks thought to help protect them from air infected with plague as early as the 1600's.

1656 engraving by Paul Furst of a plague doctor

For the most part, when seen in television and movies, these masks just look cool and witchy!

Hello, today me and a friend were walking in a cemetery (which we do every week, always the same path) and we came across an area in which someone had done a voodoo doll spell, and left the doll and candles there. I was wondering if you would know any way of breaking the spell, in order to cause no harm to the person which the doll was made for? Blessed be :)

-------------

Dear Sofia,

Voodoo dolls aren't always made with evil intent, they merely represent a specific person. Without knowing if it was an evil intent spell, I wouldn't touch it because you could be disrupting something that is positive, good, and meant to help another person.

Do you happen to know a Priest/Priestess who have written a book together about this topic? Thanks in advance!

Modern-Day Persecution of Witches

Recently, the New York Times published an article called The Persecution of Witches, 21st Century Style. I highly recommend that everyone take a few minutes to read it.

Most of the examples of persecution detailed in this article didn't happen here in the United States, but it's a grim reminder of what we face. "Witchcraft" is often a term used by ignorant people to justify horrific crimes against others; these people were victims and weren't even practicing Witches.

In light of the fact that some of our readers and questioners come from some very dangerous places in the world, we want to take this opportunity to wish you all safety and peace. Take care of yourselves out there.

Titanium from Abu Dhabi, UAE

Hi, I am quite a newbie. I became interested in Wicca the moment I saw fascinating images and art related to it. My heart skipped a beat every single time I learned more of it. Moreover, I realized that Wicca has already taken my heart. The tradition, the purpose, the views, and the sum of it made me feel so vibrant. I have imagined myself fulfilling the milestones of Wicca. I love the environment and everything living in it. Reading through Wiccan literature captures me more and more. I am aware that I can be a solitary believer, however I'd like to interact with other Wiccans. UAE has banned and prohibited witchcraft or Wicca, however, a little caution is no issue. I'd like to ask if there is someone you may have known who practices Wicca in the UAE. When can I possibly be called a true Wiccan? I can't be initiated in a coven since I'm too far from the rest. I've learned that self-initiation is possible. However, I still get these uncertainties about when I may label myself as a Wiccan. This question may already be a common question from newbies, but your advice will matter most to me.

-------------

Dear Titanium,

Generally initiations are a year and a day after you first began practicing. Because of the area you live in, you need to use a lot more than just a little caution. I need you to be very aware that practicing witchcraft in your country is punishable by death. So please remain in the broom closet and don't share this info with anybody. It takes one person in a bad mood to tell the wrong person and you could be in serious danger. The Lord and Lady will understand the necessity of you being a practitioner in your heart and soul... but not outwardly. I never thought I would say this to a practicing witch, but I doubt it's even safe for you to have a Book of Shadows.

Green from Europe

Blessings! What shall I do with two mean, wicked neighbors who don't like children, who take photos of our small garden and the building complaining that it is two or three centimeters too high, which by the way it is not, and calls for the police on this?! I never had the police at my door, ever, until twice now. These neighbors play music very loud. He is like not a musician, but a collage maker. They invite their friends over and make a lot a noise, listen to their television so loud, and we never complain because our little one cries a bit, but he's a kid - I can't turn him down! My girl and I came here to start a family; it is a nice place, not too expensive, animals and nature everywhere, but the thought of a second kid is starting to look a bit weird in these conditions. I am an artist and a spiritual person. I practice the craft and sometimes I feel like cursing them or something, but I don't want to. I don't like harming anyone, but this man and woman are even poisoning the neighbors too. Some strange stuff is going on, like our bell is not working, and we have both our numbers on a sticker outside, and I start to receive calls from an unknown source... complaints about our bikes, too. Sorry to bother you with this, but I am desperate, believe me. Please can you give us some advice?

-------------

Dear Green,

If it is at all possible, move! People like that are just naturally nasty and there's really not a whole lot that can be done about them. If you own the place or moving is just not an option, you can try hiding orogonite in your yard. It's a man-made resin that absorbs negative energy and retransmits it as positive energy. You can also try to bind your neighbors' nasty gossipy behavior. Just modify the spell written in my response to Carol from Stafford, VA.

Jessie from Queens, NY

Hey there, I was quite interested on the world of witches and the Wiccan religion. But there's something bothering me about the Wiccan Rede I read on one article. It says "When the wheel has turned to Yule light the log the Horned One rules." It doesn't mean the y'know "Devil", right? Because I refused to believe that. And there's also a three-fold law on witchcraft in which if someone did something good or bad, it comes back three times on him or her. Is it true or wrong? I've been fascinated by the world of Wicca, but I just need to assure myself that the belief I tried to follow was a right choice.

-------------

Dear Jessie,

Yule, the winter solstice, is the longest night of the year. The Horned One, who is NOT the devil, is the Wiccan God of the Sun and brings longer days during His rule.

As for the three-fold law, Witches do believe that what we do comes back to us. Our acts of kindness, forgiveness, and love are returned to us three times. Our acts of nastiness, bitterness, and hate are also returned to us three times.

This is actually a pretty good question... thanks for asking!

Is it possible to be a witch that helps others rather than mostly herself? I know I cannot directly just put a spell on someone to make their problems go away. I've always been helpful to others and I feel like I should be able to help people with guidance or be able to give them protection. And is it possible to ask the god/goddess to help someone who does not themselves practice witchcraft but is open and willing to let me help them?

-------------

Dear Cheyenne,

Your heart is in the right place, but make sure your ego stays in check.

High priestesses, priestesses, and healers help those in need, but they don't do the work for their clients. Offering guidance, support, time, assistance... yes. Offering to give their own energy for protection, casting spells for others, or taking care of the clients' problems for them... no.

Our job is to help empower people enough for them to take care of themselves.

I have a very important court case coming up. I know that I will win, but how much I get is the real question. I have an EEO case against my job for discrimination against my now permanent disability. It actually wasn't permanent until they forced me to work outside of my medical restrictions, causing me to get hurt again, twice. Now I am severely limited in what I can physically do. My back will only get worse from now on and I will require more surgeries in the future. I appear fairly normal on a good day, but I am no longer allowed to bend or twist, or do any of the adrenaline junkie things that I like to do anymore, which really sucks. I might never be able to carry a child through a pregnancy and my doctor says that I am not allowed to ride horses again which is my absolute favorite thing to do. I'm not looking to make trouble for my job, which I still work at, I just want what is owed to me for, in a sense, ruining the rest of my life. Any advice or spell suggestions? Thank you do much.

Dear Damon,

I would place three gemstones where your head lies between your mattress and your box spring: bloodstone to absorb negative energy, black tourmaline to protect you while you sleep, and citrine to keep the nightmares away.

Many times dreams are a way for our subconscious mind to deal with any issues we are currently going through.

Deon from Chester, VA

I went through a period of two years where I had nightmare after nightmare, night after night. Most of the nightmares were of snakes chasing me and/or spirits attacking me and somehow partially coming out of the nightmares with me (or so it felt). I also began having many premonitions around this time of events in the near future that came to pass. Since that time period, I no longer have nightmares, nor do I move when I sleep. I wake up in the same exact position as when I went to sleep. If I do happen to have a dream that starts out as a nightmare, it quickly turns in my favor. I like to think it is because I am understanding the nature of what I truly am, but I could definitely be wrong. I try to do as much right as I can, when I can. I've never stolen a thing in my life and I try to treat others the way I would prefer to be treated, but I feel as if my two energies are clashing for control. Could I get some insight on that? Oh yea, I've never practiced any crafts. So, it isn't from that.

-------------

Dear Deon,

What two energies are clashing for control?

When we are going through a difficult time in our life, our subconscious mind tries to help us deal with the issue(s) through our dreams. Whatever issues you were having back then seem to have worked themselves out.
